About this listen

In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy fails to inform the populace of Meryton about the danger posed by having a rake such as George Wickham living in their midst. This was done to protect the reputation of his beloved sister; a sister who he fortunately prevented from eloping with the man. This failure leads to heartache for him and the family of the woman he loved.

In Fate and Consequences, Georgiana Darcy does leave with George Wickham to elope. Darcy finds her in time to prevent the wedding, but not in time to stop the news of her ruin from spreading. Now a humbled man, he must try to find his and his sister's place in society. A twist of Fate introduces him at his darkest hour to the woman he otherwise might have resisted loving, and who helps him to restore his sister, and his wounded soul. This is a what-if story of love and reconciliation. This story contains scenes of a mature nature.

Nice, long, romantic tale

I love an in depth multi-faceted variation. This one really shows the negative effects of gossip and reputation, as well as the power of friendship and love. D and E were so sweet together and their romance is lava hot. The performance was good although I enjoyed it more at 1.2 speed. Which also took the listen time down to 25 hours. I look forward to delving into more of this author’s books. #moresteaminJAFF

Loved the book

I have read this book several times and was so excited when I saw the narrated version. Even more so that it wasn't virtual voice. Unfortunately, I did not care for the voice actors male voices. Especially Mr Darcy's voice. it was not deep enough. He sounded more like a boy than a man. Hearing it pulled me out of the story on occasion. Most notably during the "intimate " scenes.
Otherwise, I enjoyed it very much and will listen to it again.
I hope Linda Wells brings more of her books to audio. I have read them many times over the years.

Yay! A Linda Wells Audiobook!

Ms. Wells has been a very long-time favorite author of mine, and I have the paperbacks to prove it. This is thirty hours of listening pleasure, with most of the story taking place after the Ramsgate/Wickham incident that summer through winter. The sad childhood of Fitzwilliam Darcy is explored, along with the unhappy family-pressured marriage of his parents. The origins of the fractious Bennet marriage is also unfolded. Darcy and Elizabeth are each affected by this, and desire respect and love in marriage. Other reviewers of the book tell more of the story. I recommend it!

I will only add that the book and audiobook description clearly state it has scenes of a mature nature. It is my opinion that anyone who disregards that warning and negatively rates this, or any other book or audiobook due to the mature content, is a “MR. COLLINS”. Grab your salts and consider that a lowest-of-the-low insults in a P&P Variation review.

Gossip, scandal, and secret letters

In this P&P variation, Georgiana leaves Ramsgate with Wickham and Mrs Younge. Darcy and Col Fitzwilliam give chase and find them in the small market town of Meryton. Georgiana is devastated realizing her folly. Later, her brother looks out the window and is caught by a silly site of a young lady (Elizabeth) and a donkey playing tug-a-war with her bonnet. This scene brings a smile to his lips. As they are leaving the town, Georgiana is crying so much that she is in need of a dry handkerchief and Elizabeth provides her one. Darcy is able to get her name & direction so it can be returned. This Darcy has not had a happy childhood or that of loving parents. This story explores his & Georgiana's downfall in society along with the realization of who their true friends and family are. With the help of trusted staff, letters soon begin flowing between Georgiana and Elizabeth with Darcy adding his own. Through this exchange of letters all three of these characters grow and develop strong friendships (Darcy realizes that he has fallen in love with Elizabeth via these heartfelt honest letters). There are some anxiety (between missing letters & unwanted suitors) for Darcy & Elizabeth that thankfully was able to be resolved before too much time but both grew from this experience. Darcy realizes that he does not want to be part of the society who love gossip and are so willing to tear down people. There is some hidden family history that Darcy, Elizabeth & Georgiana have to deal with. You will love the confrontation between Mrs Bennet and Lady Catherine!

I have the paperback & was so excited that Linda Wells brought this to the audiobook audience. We all look forward to more of her stories in this format!

It’s Linda Wells!

Linda Wells finally comes to audio! I hope this will be only the first of all of her books. This story presents a variation that has Georgiana actually face ruin and the subsequent consequences, even though she is rescued by Darcy and Fitzwilliam before Wickham actually takes away her virtue. The storyline also presents a different perspective in that Darcy’s parents were unkind towards him as a boy because of their own issues and how that affects him as an adult. Fabulous Elizabeth and Darcy romance, and others find love too.

Katherine Anderson is very good as narrator. One thing I noted, though, is that, sometimes, she forgets to change voices during dialogue so that until the dialogue indicates a change in character, I think the last person is still talking. Maybe it’s just me. Otherwise great!

Mild angst. Mature content.

Be still my heart

I would read Ms Wells’s shopping lists. I love her books and frequently reread them. I anxiously await her publishing her new book as I do not have access to the fan site where she is unrolling it.
This is a great book and because it is a VARIATION and not a copy of the original, I have no problems with the author’s tweaking of the characters. In fact, after reading hundreds of these variations, I will not read a variation that does not significantly deviate from the original.
I have periodically looked for audiobooks by Ms Wells. I was very happy to purchase this and hope for more. My only complaint is that I would have preferred a male narrator. I would rather listen to a male trying to do a female voice than a woman trying to do a male voice. In this story, an authentic male voice for Darcy is essential. In fact, I would say that is true for all of Ms Well’s books as, for me, Darcy is the pivot point of her books. Also, there was not enough distinction between the voices making it hard to discern which character was speaking. Otherwise, the narrator does a fine job.
