About this listen

What would have happened if Jane had been born male?

James Bennet is the perfect heir to Longbourn. He is always looking out for his sisters and mother, making sure they have the opportunity to receive proper education, and always making sure they have the guidance and direction they need. He purchased a small cottage to ensure that his mother and sisters had somewhere to live in the event that something happened to him and his father. He works tirelessly on the estate to ensure that Longbourn is profitable. He puts any additional money that comes into the estate towards ensuring that his sisters have dowries that are appropriate for their social standing.

The summer before the story began, James had done the Darcy family a great service, almost certainly keeping Georgiana from ruin. Between the debt owed to the Bennets and the younger girls being away at school, Darcy's objections to the Bennets are greatly lessened. Despite the divide in their social standing, the Darcys and the Bennets find themselves drawn to each other. Yet, given their differing situations, can their connection ever become deeper than just friendship?

This one strays really far from canon, but I'm not mad about it. Jane is replaced with a brother in this story, and it seems he has some of Jane's personality traits. He also is sweet and caring of his sisters, is diligent as the heir and even though he faces some challenges, he has a lovely story. The other couplings in this story are well written and evelove naturally, all with a bit of strugle in them, but it makes them believable. This is a LONG book, there are certainly scenes that could have been trimmed, but personally - the longer the better!

If you aren't turned off by re-casting in your P&P and love a long one I would strongly recommend this story. Obvi - no need to tell a stroy about StevieZ, she is the undisputed queen of this genre!

totally different take on P&P, but i liked it

Putting a son at the head of Bennet family made an interesting twist throughout most of the book. NOT having the quiet Jane felt incomplete. I hadn't realized how that character balanced the vivacity of the other sisters.
To me the plethora of additional families added especially at the end really didn't work well. felt the story drag down before it ended.

I really recommend this variation. I think this version of Collins, while appalling, is also quite believable. I also really enjoyed the idea of the sisters having an elder brother not only to serve as the heir, but as a protector. He is a sweet, gentle man who is also conscious of what is required in justice.

Great story

Elizabeth and Mary visit Ramsgate with their older brother, James. During this visit they befriend Georgiana Darcy. James writes to Darcy when he finds out that Wickham is there. Mr Bennet lets James run the estate and it is better for that. Mrs Bennet is not as flighty as she has the security she craves in the original P&P. Lady Catherine pushes Mr Collins to do some very bad things and there are consequences for it. Several things in the story could have been tightened up but overall it is a good story that Stevie Zimmerman's performance makes it even better.

Older Bennet brother
