About this listen

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a scream.

In the remote mountains of Northern Alaska, Dr. Riley Middleton and her team of archeologists discover a burial site containing mummified remains dating to the last ice age. None of them notice the warning carved into the entrance or realize that the tomb had been deliberately sealed from the outside until they’ve already released a virus that turns ordinary people into murderous monsters. But there’s something even more terrifying inside...something ancient...something unspeakably evil.

Meanwhile, strange events are happening all across the country. A young girl in Washington begins drawing pictures of crime scenes, including details she can’t possibly know. In Maryland, a researcher finds the physiological cause of psychopathy in the brain of a mass murderer. A college student in New York develops precognitive abilities. In Michigan, a federal agent collars a serial killer whose murders continue unabated. And an anthropology professor in Massachusetts notices graffiti featuring the same cryptic designs that the Anasazi left on the walls of their abandoned cliff dwellings.

Once the deadly contagion reaches the contiguous United States, it spreads like wildfire through the population centers. With the infected running rampant through the streets, killing everyone in their way, a Hopi elder sets out from the Arizona desert to gather the survivors for a final battle that will determine the fate of humanity.

Excellent narration!

The many twists and turns of this book were only made better by the excellent narration! So many unique characters, all played beautifully by the gifted, Gary Tiedemann.

Super long but super good

It's super long but if you want to get lost in excellent storytelling, this book is for you. McBride weaves excellent detail and character development with his plot. Builds suspense like no author I've ever read (not even my own books). Leaves you asking "what would I do in that situation". It's a real experience and you experience how everything looks, feels, sounds and tastes. I can't wait to listen to the other books in the saga.

This book needs attention!

This book is one of the best post-apocalyptic books I’ve ever read! My favorite is “Swan Song” but this is right on the heels of that book. One thing is for sure - it’s leagues better than “The Stand”.

It took a while for me to get into the author’s writing style… at times it felt like I was in a Masters class on biology or nuclear fusion. Once you get over the fact that the author likes to show off how smart he is, I ended up enjoying the technical jargon by the end as it’s obvious he researched the subject matter extensively and I learned a lot of interesting info.

The characters have depth and, while some are a bit cliche (female Norman Bates in love with geek pushed to his limits) all of them are a lot of fun.

I couldn’t stop listening to this one and immediately got book 2. If King would have written this, it would be a household name. I wish Mr. McBride luck as he’s an excellent writer. I’ll be listening to all of his books in the very near future!

Long but good

Starts out from the beginning of the SHTF. Lot of detail, lot of delving into the characters, but I never skipped any or got tired of the story. A well worth it read. Virus and ancient spirits mix it up for this apocalypse.

Gripping

I was concerned after reading the first couple of chapters, but they were necessary to set up the rest of the story. Now I can't wait for the next book in the series.

The beginning was pretty good…

It started out fairly well, but soon became a mosh-mosh of intertwined stories…I only continued to out how it would end. A creative and imaginative storyline, but turned out a bit disappointing for me.

What am I even listening too??

I realized when I bought this and it downloaded and started on chapter 6 that I had already purchased and returned this book once! Oops! Anyways I’m about 2 hours into this book and nothing, I mean NOTHING has happened. We have been introduced to about 17 different main characters that all have a lifetime back story. I have no idea what I am listening too. Im trying so hard to stick it out. Also i have a feeling it’s going to be one of those “spiritual” zombie books if you know what I mean. Also the who ever does the narration using the same exact voice for every single character, it is very hard to figure out who is talking
