About this listen

It's bad enough when someone you know is brutally murdered; it's worse when the guy was a paranoid schizophrenic helplessly bound to a wheelchair. Sam Acquillo and Jackie Swaitkowski tried to look after Alfie Aldergreen, as had others around the Village of Southampton, but now they were forced to wonder what else they could have done. One thing is for certain: Alfie's killers are about to know what it means to murder a friend of Sam - former corporate troubleshooter, former professional boxer, and all-around ornery bulldog - and Jackie, a defense lawyer often described as an avenging angel.

This sixth installment in the Sam Acquillo Hamptons mystery series brings back Knopf's ensemble of famously eccentric and involving characters, not the least of which is Sam's mutt, Eddie Van Halen. Not just a crime story, it examines the fraught intersection of wealth, culture, politics, and the ravages of an ugly war. Combining beautiful watery settings with a unique look into the underbelly of the Hamptons, it's a mystery you won't find anywhere else.

Sam bills himself as a sometimes unmanageable and bona fide badass. He reads Camus, Kant, deChardin, I quotes Shakespeare and Cicero (in Latin) and listens to Miles Davis while drinking copious tumblers of vodka on the rocks as he lounges in his Adirondack at water's edge endlessly hitting balls for his Wonder Dog Eddie to retrieve. But that's not all he does. He's indeed a genuine badass who can get beat up nearly killed shot stabbed crushed and in the narrowest of circumstances still Escape to repair in seemingly no time at all and then back on the road to figure out what the hell is going on. Great writing, great dialogue, really Vivid scenes, super interesting well researched side bars and narrative kept me listening nearly Non-Stop. The narration is over the top fantastic. I'm really enjoying this series and the cortege of cohorts surrounding Sam and his beloved dog Eddie Van Halen. I keep wondering if he's going to end up with Jackie and not Amanda...?!?! 👍👍👍👍👍

Love this series...!!!

Keith Szarabajka has vastly improved on his style over his reading of "Black Swan". I say reading because that is exactly what it sounded like to me, in "Black Swan". The characters all sounded alike, and he sounded like he was reading the book, not performing as a voice actor. He sounds much more comfortable with the characters in "Cop Job". Overall, it's a great series. Love it.

Great Series

As usual, the story was great. But now his voice was good. It had a gravelly deep quality that I think suits Sam. But what the heck was with those accents? Is this guy ever been to New York or Long Island or any of the boroughs? He had the Long Islanders and the New Yorkers all sounding like they came from Boston or Maine. Jessica, who grew up with an upper class mother and had a top-notch education, sounded like a punk. As did her nerdy boyfriend. My God, he sounded like he was from a gang. In fact, just about every character sounded like they were young roughs from either Brooklyn and the Bronx or Maine and New Hampshire. I hope this guy never reads a novel set in Vermont.

What the heck!

Another great Sam Aquino story with the caveat that Absolute vodka cannot compare to the only vodka worth drinking: Kettle One.

A good story from Knopf

Chris Knopf pens a complex mystery as Sam Acquillo has his hands full with several crimes. Keith Szarabajka’s range of precise vocals goes above and beyond. Subplots galore, many suspicious and snarky characters make for an intent listen. Szarabajka, one of my absolute favorites, again and again shows us why. Please keep this talented narrator in future books. I can’t imagine anyone else. Add to all this, “Cop Job” was available in the Audible Plus catalogue at no cost. I’ve had great luck with Audible Plus over the years. Give it a chance, so worth it. Highly recommended! I’ve got more waiting in my Audible library.

Sam Acquillo series a winner with Szarabajka

Be advised: Sam Acquillo is one of my favorite fictional characters - and the folks that people his Hamptons universe feel like neighbors. So, it's going to be hard for me to write a critically objective review here. My main gripe is that 4 years between Acquillo adventures is far too long and I'm hoping that Chris Knopf doesn't make us wait quite so long for the next installment.

As in the five, previous Acquillo novels, Knopf delivers an intelligent plot, interesting character interactions, a great sense of place and detail and a smart, logical conclusion.

As for the narration, I thought Mr. Szarabajka might have overcooked some of the New York accents a bit, but I'm just so happy to have a new Acquillo adventure, I'm not going to let that little quibble dampen my joy or enthusiasm.

Welcome Back Sam

As with the previous books in this series, I found this book to be entertaining. This book kept me guessing to the end though I managed to figure out some points, the big reveal came as a surprise.
I would recommend this book to anyone.

Entertaining

This is a great series- some books stronger than others but all are good. The characters develop well over the series. Onward to #7! : ))))

Watch the Little Peconic Bay with Sam et. al.

Listening in order, this is the best story yet. Memorably, there is a scathing insult to an RN hospital receptionist, a moving funeral speech about trust between warriors, and many clever bits of dialog that made me laugh out loud. The narrator also did his best so far.

I enjoyed this!
