About this listen

“Caldwell's strong and charismatic protagonist Jake Clearwater is the new Perry Mason, and I can't wait to read the next entry in the series. Highly recommended!” — Eric Petersen, The Internet Review of Books

A gripping legal thriller where the pursuit of justice comes at a deadly cost.

When a former prosecutor agrees to represent a death-row inmate, he expects a tough legal fight. What Jake Clearwater doesn't expect is the case of his career—one that threatens his life. Duane Durgeon has been convicted of brutally murdering a young couple, and the evidence against him seems damning. A partial fingerprint, a deal-making ex-lover, and a violent past make Durgeon an easy man to hate. But as Jake delves deeper into the case, he uncovers disturbing truths about the trial that no one else wants to see.

In a legal system designed to convict and forget, Jake risks everything to expose the cracks. As his investigation intensifies, so do the threats against him, pushing Jake to the edge of both the law and his conscience. With powerful enemies and a looming retrial, can Jake unravel the lies in time, or will the cost of justice be too high?

For readers who love courtroom suspense, high-stakes legal drama, and the complexities of moral dilemmas, Cost of Arrogance is a must-read.

“This book is a must-read for any fan of courtroom thrillers. There is no stone left unturned when Jake Clearwater takes on a case.” — San Francisco Book Review

“Caldwell has written a chilling legal thriller around the retrial of a convicted murderer facing the death penalty.” — Norm Goldman, Bookpleasures.com

The virtual voice makes it hard to complete the audiobook. Storyline was decent and I like the protagonist but it needs a real voice.

Liked details of court procedure. Didn’t like the many twists and turns. Didn’t like the love scenes.

Great story. Shows how ethical attorneys can make a difference and how manipulating the politically motivated is so in need of rooting out of the Justice system.

The story was good but I did not like the virtual voice - weird pronunciations and robotic tone with odd inflections sometimes.

No to virtual voice

Apart from a few stumbles with complex numerals the virtual voice was excellent
Hope that keeps cost of audiobooks or expands available titles

That the virtual voice was So good

I was excited to start a new legal thriller. The premise is great. The law school and the court room scenes are well written. The action and mystery are also great. However, the virtual voice RUINED it! I skipped past most chapters just to get to the end. Virtual voice totally negates the point of purchasing an Audible book. When reading, your imagination provides the emotion. When listening to TV and music, the performer provides the emotion. A normal audiobook does this as well. Virtual Voice cannot do this. I'm not purchasing the next book in the series because it is also Virtual Voice. This is shameful and totally disrespectful of the author's work.

A Disservice to the Author

I hated the performance. It ruined an otherwise good story I guess you used AI because it’s cheap but I can’t stand it
