Publisher's summary

When a small-town lawyer defends a local murder suspect, they are swept into a deadly international coverup.

Lee Acker is horrified by the violent killing of his childhood best friend. And he is equally distraught to discover that he stands wrongly accused of the crime.

As a whirlwind of media frenzy and a high-profile investigation descend on Lee's ordinarily quiet Georgia town, he boldly flees to Mexico in a hunt for answers.

But Lee barely has time to catch whispers of shady international dealings before he finds himself detained and extradited back to the United States to stand trial.

Now, Lee's last hope rests with the local legal community's rising star, Maggie Reynolds, the only defense lawyer who is skilled—and determined—enough to clear his name. Caught in the crosshairs of a deadly game and armed only with the hints and rumors gleaned from Lee's brief time in Mexico, Maggie and Lee must work against the clock to put together the pieces of an increasingly shocking puzzle.

The picture that takes shape will turn the courtroom on its head . . . and expose a sinister conspiracy that extends far beyond this small Georgia town.

Contains mature themes.

Interesting legal procedural

This book is somewhat predictable, but it has enough unusual elements to keep the story interesting even if fairly unrealistic. This includes the ending that has several surprising twists.

Not enough legal stuff

Courtroom scenes came at the end. Book dragged on with lots of family history and southern history.

Too long

The story was too long and just got more boring over time. Anticlimactic ending. I won't listen to any more books from this author

Fantastic debut

By the end of this first book, I am so attached to the characters. I can’t wait to read the next books in the series. The author’s pacing and character development are perfect. The settings feel so authentic. And don’t let the legal aspects of the book intimidate you—everything is explained well without feeling like a textbook. Looking forward to reading In Defense of Charlotte and to watching Cargile’s writing career grow from this amazing debut book.

Grateful

This is the first installment in the series of Blake County Legal Thrillers. It’s a dream to get to share this novel with readers. I’m grateful for those that spend time with the audiobook version of this story. Thank you to Lary Rosenblatt, the team at SRP, and Michael Butler Murray for making this happen.

The story was pretty good, but not memorable

I listened to this book about 1.5 weeks ago while on vacation and just had a chance to catch up with writing reviews. I had to read the description to remind myself what the book was about, but I still couldn't recall how it ended or very many details. I recall that I like the book well enough and could recall a few scenes, but overall it just was not memorable.

Just Okay, Too Long

A strong-willed teenager gets involved in a murder investigation. Not a fan of spoiled mouthy know-it-all teens who frequently challenge adults on what they perceive as injustices, rights or wrongdoings. Parts of the story occur out of the United States and I don’t really understand why. Story started out with potential and then got boring. The mysterious rich people were stereotypes. The mixed race romance was treated shamelessly and easily became a foil. The narrator was exceptional. I giggled at his female voices which sometimes sounded like a man. The ending of the book is like a sad movie. No clear purpose for it except sickness and hatred,

Good but not great!

Took awhile to get going and for the pieces to start to come together. Enjoyed it but it could have been better.

I Kept Waiting

it was a story with so much potential. It was predictable, but ok. the pace was a bit slow. I kept waiting for the pace or intrigue to really pick up, but every opportunity for it happen was approached with a show matter of fact sorry line. The end was unsatisfying, and while I can understand the author might be trying to leave it open for future works, it is written as if you have been given answers and an ending, when really you have been left with nothing but unanswered questions.
