About this listen

Powerful character arcs create powerful stories.

Have you written a story with an exciting concept and interesting characters - but it just isn't grabbing the attention of readers or agents? It's time to look deeper into the story beats that create realistic and compelling character arcs. Internationally published, award-winning novelist K.M. Weiland shares her acclaimed method for achieving memorable and moving character arcs in every book you write.

By applying the foundation of the three-act story structure and then delving even deeper into the psychology of realistic and dynamic human change, Weiland offers a beat-by-beat checklist of character arc guidelines that flexes to fit any type of story.

This comprehensive book will teach you:

  • How to determine which arc - positive, negative, or flat - is right for your character.
  • Why you should never pit plot against character. Instead, learn how to blend story structure and character development.
  • How to recognize and avoid the worst pitfalls of writing novels without character arcs.
  • How to hack the secret to using overarching character arcs to create amazing trilogies and series.
  • And much more!

Gaining an understanding of how to write character arcs is a game-changing moment in any author's pursuit of the craft.

Great Food For Thought

This makes a lot of great points and gave me some new ideas for my own stories and made me realize why I was having so much trouble with my stories.

Complete Master Class in creating great story arcs

I'm not even a writer (yet, lol). I've recently become interested in the art of storytelling to better understand why I enjoy some of my favorite stories and characters as much as I do. Not only did this book help me accomplish that motive, but I also learned a great deal about the formula used to make those characters so obsession worthy. I would recommend this book to any writer or aspiring writer. I feel like this book has a lot to offer regardless of your experience level.

Excellent!

I have listened to this book 3 times, because every time I hear it, I learned something new. The narrator was so good, that I had to buy all the rest of K. M. Weiland‘s books. K. M. Weiland knows how to write an excellent book, and Sonja Field knows how to narrate in a way that packs a punch.

Excellent book on writing

I bought the audio after owning and having read (multiple times) the physical book. It's one of the better books on plot, making sure to tie it to the character's arc rather than just a sequence of events. I've used it to analyze other stories and to outline my own. And the section on the flat arc helped explain a lot of stories that never quite fit the traditional character arc. I highly recommend this book.

A stellar analysis of character arcs within story structure

I loved this resource! K.M. Weiland dives into well-loved classics to demonstrate what the best stories have in common when it comes to character arcs. She synthesizes these great works into the most compelling markers of character development within each story and shares research on where these beats tend to fit best within an overarching plot structure. Her approach is formulaic, but far from stifling my creativity, I feel so empowered after reading this book, especially amidst the delight and terror of trying to write my first fiction novel out of college.

Solid coverage of character arcs.

Helpful, and less repetitive than many craft books. I particularly enjoyed a section describing flat arcs and comparing them with books with no arc.

flat arc characters

If all the books on screenwriting and writing in general that I have read, this is the only book that covers flat arc characters. worth reading for that alone.
