Publisher's summary

King. Politician. Warrior. Conqueror.

1189. Richard the Lionheart's long-awaited goal comes true as he is crowned King of England. Setting his own kingdom in order, he prepares to embark on a gruelling crusade to reclaim Jerusalem.

With him on every step of the journey is Ferdia, his loyal Irish follower. Together they travel from southern France to Italy, to the kingdom of Sicily and beyond.

Finally poised to sail to the Holy Land, Richard finds a bitter two-year-long siege awaiting him. And with it, the iconic Saracen leader responsible for the loss of Jerusalem, Saladin.

No one can agree who should fill the empty throne of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and Saladin's huge army shadows Richard's every move. Conditions are brutal, the temperatures boiling, and on the dusty field of Arsuf, the Lionheart and his soldiers face their ultimate test...

Well written

Kane writes very clearly. Not enough good writers around. The characters and their weave of context create the difficulties of the early medieval period

Entertaining historical fiction

Well done!
I enjoyed this series & am looking forward to the 3rd book in 2022. The narrator is outstanding; a flawless performance. great voice, professional- attention to every detail
in expression.
Nothing is held back from the bloody battle scenes. Wonderful choice for an audible book . 4 stars not 5 because found myself wandering from the book sometimes. I listen much during the day when doing other things. It has in depth information about Richard the Lionheart . I learned much and enjoyed it. God’s legs, I am tad bit weary of hearing King Richard swear “god’s legs”..!

Ben Kane

This is a great story. I am a big fan of this historical era (more so English history) and history overall. Ben gave me a great window in how those days in the throne room and on the battlefield may have looked. Great story line and Philip Stevens' performance was outstanding. Cannot wait for the next book in the series.

Enjoyable Series

This is the 2nd book in a three book series. I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books and I can’t wait to start the third.

King Richard, the man.

That era and the legend of King Richard has been gloriously demystified and scriven into flesh and blood.

Very boring

Ben Kane’s Roman novels are excellent, but this story is just boring. Apart from an account of The Lionheart’s participation in the 3rd crusade there isn’t really anything. Characters are flat and unlikeable and do not seem to have any goal other than to please their masters, who they worship irrationally.

If I wanted a crappy love story...

I would have bought a Harlequin novel if I wanted a cheap novel of forbidden childish trusts..

I wanted to like it

I was on the fence until Richard gave a speech stolen word for word from Henry V. just lazy.
