About this listen

In the fast-paced Breakers series, humanity faces not one apocalypse, but two: first a lethal pandemic, then a war against those who made the virus. It's been six years since the plague and Tristan has spent five of them in Maui with her brother Alden. Life seems quiet. Simple. Peaceful. All these illusions are torn away when she discovers an alien installation hidden in the mountains. In response, she prepares a boat and starts work on a new home deep in the forest. But the locals don't appreciate her raiding their town for supplies. Soon, their resentment flares into open war - and draws the attention of the aliens, who bomb the area relentlessly. With their home and lives in ruin, Tristan and Alden flee deep into the jungle of Hana. And discover a secret paradise. Yet it's not meant to last. Off the coast of China, Ness and his alien ally Sebastian are tracking an alien conspiracy. Its tendrils will lead them straight to Maui - and pull humanity to the brink of extinction.

Worth The Time

If you like the other books in the series, you will like this one too. I thought this was the best one so far and I am looking forward to the next one.

Despite White Male Gaze and Myopia.

Love the action and narration. Those elements save the story from the author's unbearably myopic gaze. This is a review of tge series and not just this book. The author clearly has zero understanding of anything besides whiteness and communicates that with all the brilliance of an amoeba.

Fantastic voice acting

Ray Chase is excellent at giving each character their own voice. He also does the best alien squid thing voice I've ever heard.

Excellent Series of Human Disasters on many levels

What made the experience of listening to Cut Off the most enjoyable?

Each book in the series has a great cast of characters. All through out the series, it was enjoyable to hear about characters introduced in previous chapters show up again in later books. The characters were well done and fit into the story very nicely. Cut Off wrapped up the story very well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

That is a very tough question to answer. I enjoyed the dark humor as narrated by Ray Chase. Any character with this dark humor side is ranked high on my list. Even then I still cannot pick out a favorite without back spacing over my previous choice. There were loads of bad characters, but it's funny I cannot remember their names like I remember these core characters that were all good.

Have you listened to any of Ray Chase’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, but only in between reading one of these books. I really enjoy his narration style and humor. Although I wonder if it is actually the author's humor expressed by Ray Chase. In any case, I plan to look for another book that Ray Chase has narrated.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reactions. No allergies, viruses or coughs. Although I did laugh quite often by the dark humor, as previously mentioned.

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed the series of books so much I hate to see the experience end. I am not sure if a continuing story line is possible, but if another book is written by the same author/narrator combo, count me in.
