Russ Tamblyn
About this listen
Actor. Artist. Cultural icon.
Dancing on the Edge
A bold memoir of an extraordinary, singular life lived by one of the world’s most beloved and acclaimed figures: Russ Tamblyn.
With more than eighty years as a celebrated artist and actor under his belt, Russ Tamblyn is a cherished figure to name among cinephiles and pop culture fans alike, working with such legendary directors as Robert Wise, David Lynch, and Quentin Tarantino. He tumbled through his acclaimed starring role in the original West Side Story as an actor and acrobatic dancer, taught Elvis Presley some signature dance moves, and became an unlikely visionary in the counterculture movement of the sixties alongside peers and friends Henry Miller and Dennis Hopper.
Russ deftly guides listeners through his star-studded life and his search for a deeper, more connected existence: attending school with Elizabeth Taylor, earning an Academy Award nomination for Peyton Place, dropping out of Hollywood at the height of his career to become a fine artist in Topanga Canyon, and forging a lifelong friendship with Neil Young. He shares the painful breakup of a twenty-year marriage and the joy of finding true love and inspiration as a husband, father, and mentor in his own right.
Perfect for old and new fans alike, Dancing on the Edge is an intimate and powerful story about the singular life of one of our most gifted storytellers, artists, and stars of the silver screen.

Christina Crawford's book was an immediate bestseller, addressing the infrequently discussed topic of child abuse. When Paramount Pictures released the film, starring Faye Dunaway as Crawford, it was critically panned, and remains one of the most legendary critical bombs in film history. The lavish, big-screen adaptation drew unexpected laughter in the scenes depicting life in the Crawford household. Rarely have such good intentions been met with such ridicule.

Story
Joan Crawford's remarkable forty-five-year motion picture career is one of the industry's longest. Signing her first contract in 1925, she was crowned an MGM star four years later and by the mid-1930s was the most popular actress in America. In the early 1940s, Crawford's risky decision to move to Warner Bros. was rewarded with an Oscar for Mildred Pierce. This triumph launched a series of film noir classics. She teamed with rival Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, proving that Crawford, whose career had begun by defining big-screen glamor, had matured into a dramatic actress.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Absolutely facinating!
I’ve been a tremendous fan of Twin Peaks since it first aired on television, but was well into the series until I realized that Russ Tamblyn was also in one of my all-time favorite movie/musicals, West Side Story. I have actually met him in person, so I knew this book was going to be extremely interesting but I had no idea how jaw droppingly fantastic it would be! There are countless stories, from childhood to current, and all of them are just outstanding. What a life well lived! I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially anyone interested in the history of Hollywood, television, stage and screen. It’s an added bonus to hear it read by the author himself.

Get in Step with Russ.
Aside from West Side Story, I knew very little about Russ Tamblyn. I am thankful for this unique, interesting and very candid memoir. I enjoyed listening to Russ describe his early years in Hollywood alongside Dean Stockwell and Dennis Hopper, to his years as an artist in Topanga...this book keeps you invested. Three wives later...Russ talks about his self-discovery and love of family. This book is sweet and nostalgic.
