About this listen

Missing teenagers and execution-style murders vie for crime reporter Nichelle Clarke's attention as she chases the stories into a web of intrigue and danger, determined to discover the truth at any cost.

Nichelle Clarke owes her boss a big headline. She gets her lucky break when a member of a notorious hate group is found dead, his body dumped in the woods. But then a boy from a local LGBTQ support group goes missing, and Nichelle can't turn away from an old friend's plea for help finding him.

Police across the state are reluctant to expend dwindling resources on runaways and murdered bigots, leaving Nichelle to take the investigations into her own hands. The number of missing teenagers climbs. Meanwhile, more dead bodies point to a ruthless serial killer with prejudice in his sights. As clues and dead ends pile up in nearly equal numbers, the situation quickly spirals out of Nichelle's control.

The killer is a master at covering their tracks, and they won't stop until they've passed deadly judgment on every last bigot in the state.

Nichelle will fight her way through communities swallowed by fear to save lives . . . unless she loses her own in the process.

Contains mature themes.

Disappointed.

My least favorite of her books. The author seemed more concerned with making a point which I don’t disagree with, rather than crafting a really good story. Hoping the next book is better.

Prefer the previous narrator

I'm not sure what happened to the previous narrator, but I'm disappointed in the new one, Tiffany Morgan. Therese Plummer narrated all of the other previous books in this series, and I had a hard time getting into the story with this new narrator. She did an okay job, but the way she read the story, it was missing something to me. I love Lyndee's series, but this one fell flat to me because the narrator didn't have that something extra.

Rough to listen to

Missed previous narrators and the zeal brought to the characters. The content of LGBTQ + was not my jam, where it seemed like a forced agenda. I didn't stop listening, I made it to the end because I was held hostage in my car.

Not the same at all

Book 9 was nothing compared 1-8. I was very disappointed with it over all, but the new narrator was very flat, expressionless, and had no enthusiasm compared to the first 8 books. I love this series till book 9.

Disappointed

Loved the other books! Was looking forward to this one but it was not the same, Narrator was not the same, characters did not come alive. Story disjointed and just didn’t hold my interest.
I want the old Nichelle back.

disappointed

ive listened to all the books in this series and they have all been good. this is the first book that has been a let down. this book caters to the i am gay fad and tries to push the narrative being gay is not a mental illness, but acceptable and perfectly normal.

Hope next one’s back on track

I waited a long time for this book to come out in audio format. When it did, and I saw there was a different narrator, I searched online for a reason for the change. I found out Therese Plummer had a devastating car accident a couple of years ago. She was hit head on by a drunk driver and is still recuperating. There’s a ‘gofundme’ page to help with her expenses if you’re so inclined.
With that in mind I tried my best to be accepting of the new narrator. I hoped the people making the audiobook would have chosen someone who could bring the characters to life. But, unfortunately, they chose someone who just uses a technique of narrating with a specific cadence to read the book, rather than telling the story with appropriate emphasis on words to create tension or empathy etc. At times it sounds like she’s reading a book to children and other times that she’s just bored and going through the motions.
I found it hard to engage with the characters or care about the storyline. This book also seemed like the authors had an agenda they pounded away at. I think this issue is important, but really wish it were more in the background, and the characters and mystery were the focus.
Best wishes to Therese Plummer for a complete recovery!
I hope Lyndee Walker will see this use of the Nichelle Clark series, to be a soap box for personal agendas, has fallen flat with her readers, and that she will go back to concentrating on writing about strong, spunky, charismatic characters. They should still deal with important, current issues, but in a more arm’s length manner - this book just felt like it’s purpose wasn’t to entertain, but to be a rally for gay rights.

Not the same as the rest of the series

I absolutely loved the other books in the series... and I pregamed the whole series the week before this release and this one fell flat. All the characters seemed off, like a muted version of their pervious selves. EVERY SINGLE ONE. The story never really picked up pace . I honestly struggled to finish it.

Dangerous Intent

The story was good, though it was a bit too formulaic it really held its own for the most part. The narrator was really too shrill and sing-songy and I almost couldn't listen to her, though after having listened to the first in the series, there was actually no choice.
