About this listen

A Riveting New Crime Thriller Series from Award-Winning Journalist and Best-selling Thriller Author Lyndee Walker

Tenley Andre is the poster child for the perfect life: Gorgeous. Brilliant. Champion athlete.

Until her body is found on the drought-ravaged shores of Lake Travis one sunny April morning, igniting a firestorm of shock and speculation in one of Texas’ most affluent communities. How did a young woman with everything to live for meet such a tragic end?

Texas Ranger Faith McClellan doesn’t buy the easy verdict of another privileged, pressured teen suicide. No one else wants to look beyond it.

But when Faith connects the intricate web of lies surrounding Tenley and her family to a separate unsolved murder, she uncovers shocking se-crets. The insidious truths at the heart of this case are darker and more dangerous than she ever imagined.

Now, Faith must unmask the evil lurking in Austin’s most sacred institu-tions before another life is lost. But these secrets could destroy the care-fully curated reputations of those in powerful circles.

And they will do anything to stop her.

Probably Just Me

I struggled with this one but I'm sure it was just me, unfocused since the holidays just ended. Normally, I'm sucked into a LynDee Walker book but my attention often wandered. Regardless, the writing was great. I will listen to this again when I'm in a different mindset.

A fantastic heartfelt beginning for a great heroin

As soon as I began listening this book I got sucked in. The characters are extremely 3-dimensional. I felt like I was stepping into a real world story, where the people and places all had a past and feelings and motivations all their own. You can tell that each character was coming from somewhere and going somewhere. Not just the main characters but all the background elements as well. The mystery is intense but very thoughtful and thought-provoking. Also it is written with so much heart that at times it made me almost tear up. the narration was as heartfelt and emotive as the plot itself. A great listen!

it's a start

there was a lot going on in this book and I'll attribute that to it being the start of the series. I would have liked more on the MC back story than just the occasional snippets. I'm certain it will happen in future books. I felt the first half was slow and almost gave up. I honestly stayed with it because I like Cris Dukehart's narration.

Overall, I like LynDee's books

The books are far from rocket science, which makes them easy to follow without a whole host of characters and turns. They're fun to listen to and they keep my attention. But LynDee has a few phrases and writing habits that she overuses. Try counting the eye rolls. They get into the double digit in all her books. And she overloads on long drawn out cutesy phrases ("as nervous as a cat with a long tail in a room full of rocking chairs" types of cutesy phrases). She also takes a few liberties on police procedure, as if she's never watched any of the CSI or detective programs on tv. In what universe does a Texas Ranger on vacation just show up to a crime scene uninvited, take evidence that hasn't been photographed and logged and use it to pursue the case? Or invite the mother of the dead girl to the office of one of the detectives so she can tell her that her daughter's dead? Pretty sure that would be the actual detective's job.

As I said, not rocket science. And easy to follow. And interesting without straining your brain. But her editor isn't her friend.

Great story with dark lines

Fair warning, this story gets really dark towards the end. As expected from this type of book but I didn't really see it coming at the beginning or at all until the end part. When that part is revealed... Well it did make me pretty sick feeling. But - I love faith and the story of her and her family and really look forward to her next stories. I sort of like the Graham angle, but why make him have a casual girl on the side? I'm not impressed with that, he clearly likes Faith back and it feels pointless. I hate that men always have something going on!! Why! Can't she have a guy on the side? Stop stereotyping.

Not Pleasantly Surprised

I love Lyndee's Nichelle Clark series so I was very excited to start this one. Unfortunately, I really couldn't get into it, I dragged myself to the end of the book just hoping. The narration was bad, and her ability to convey emotion seems limited. I couldn't even buy the attraction between the two lead characters. I didn't love the story plot either, I don't mind gritty murder stories one bit but this one had so many loose ends at the end wrapped up so fast I had to rewind and listen to it again. It didn't make sense to me, and maybe it's because I was so annoyed by the narration. I bought all three books so we will see how two and three go. I may just return them for credit.
