About this listen

Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in the new novel by the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense, and takes on a case of death imitating art...

It was a stab in the dark.

On a chilly February night, during a screening of Psycho in midtown, someone sunk an ice pick into the back of Chanel Rylan's neck, then disappeared quietly into the crowds of drunks and tourists in Times Square. To Chanel's best friend, who had just slipped out of the theater for a moment to take a call, it felt as unreal as the ancient black-and-white movie up on the screen. But Chanel's blood ran red, and her death was anything but fictional.

Then, as Eve Dallas puzzles over a homicide that seems carefully planned and yet oddly personal, she receives a tip from an unexpected source: an author of police thrillers who recognizes the crime - from the pages of her own book. Dallas doesn't think it's coincidence, since a recent strangulation of a sex worker resembles a scene from her writing as well. Cops look for patterns of behavior: similar weapons, similar MOs. But this killer seems to find inspiration in someone else's imagination, and if the theory holds, this may be only the second of a long-running series.

The good news is that Eve and her billionaire husband Roarke have an excuse to curl up in front of the fireplace with their cat, Galahad, reading mystery stories for research. The bad news is that time is running out before the next victim plays an unwitting role in a murderer's deranged private drama - and only Eve can put a stop to a creative impulse gone horribly, destructively wrong.

From the author of Echoes in Death, this is the latest of the edgy, phenomenally popular police procedurals that Publishers Weekly calls "inventive, entertaining, and clever."

I love the in death series. I liked the book, because I love the series, I totally enjoyed the part where Galahad was upset with Eve because he smelled a dog on her. Of course you love the interaction between Roarke & Eve and the rest of the gang. There are some familiarities, like Sommerset is on winter vacation. The biggest thing that bothered me is the voices are off a bit. I had to go and look and make sure it was Susan Ericksen. At times the voices are off to me. She still did a good job, but it was off a bit. all in all, the book hit all the marks for me but it was not a 5 star in my opinion. Will I keep reading/listening, of Course. the book was still enjoyable, it's not one of her best. I can't wait for the next one in September.

Not my favorite but still good. love the narrator but story needed more meat in my opinion. Left me wanting more Eve and friends and the case seemed too easy. The "Skanks" were hilarious.

Pretty good

I really like the psychological twists in these books. Having a degree in Psychology just makes me love the stories more.

A woman is stabbed to death during the shower scene of Psycho. Naturally nobody saw a thing. Her friend and companion at the movie was called away by a phone call just before the murder. It's Eve and Peabody's case but a writer comes in to say the murder was lifted from the pages of her books, and it turns out two member of Eve's squad are working on another book-inspired murder. The killer is clever and has planned ahead. Reviewing the security films at the theater reveals little - it's not even obvious if the killer is male of female. Costuming, dump sites, escape routes -- everything seems planned ahead.... Eve and Roarke find themselves reading murder mysteries to look for the next likely victim -- quite a picture! Eve knows she also has to figure out the connection(s) between the killer and the writer -- clearly there is a point of contact, and Eve must find it.
Enjoyable as always. I save these books for when I have a big stressful dr's appt coming up -- they are my no-calorie dessert.

Great listen! Enjoyed hearing from other characters and wasn’t as dark as some of the past few.

One would think that after 45 books, the series would get stale. Not the case in the newest addition. I still love all the characters and the investigations. I like see Eve kinda of backing off just a little bit. She is beginning to see & accept, that things are not always under her control. To see her sitting in the library with a glass of wine reading a book, okay yes it had to do with the case, shows how far she has come.

Love this series

I’ve never listened to one of J. D. Robb’s novels and didn’t like it. Just enough “who done its” and just enough romance. She always has the perfect combo. I just did some travel in NYC though and never ran across either her or Roark.😁 oh well, maybe next time.🤣

Another winner!

You can normally get a feel for what Lt Dallas is going to do but Darkness was a new feel- not so urgent but still fast paced. Great vibe off all the characters.

Unusual for JD Robb but brilliant
