About this listen

Every time we Google something, Facebook someone, or just carry a phone, we create data. Yet, we do not benefit from this wealth of information as much as we should. Andreas Weigend - an advisor to Alibaba, BMW, Hyatt, MasterCard, and Lufthansa, among others - wants to change that. In Data for the People, he proposes six basic data rights that we all need to make better decisions. Big data is here to stay. The time has come to shift the balance of power back to the individual and find out how data is being used and what needs to change to make data work for you. Vital listening for anyone who owns a mobile phone, Internet connection, or even a debit card, Data for the People puts the power of data back into our hands.

Thought Provoking & Mind Blowing, A Must Read!

What did you love best about Data for the People?

The author perspective on data is profound and insightful. As someone working in Silicone Valley, lots of ideas from the book are very stimulating for my understanding of the data world. I'm especially intrigued by how the author connects the dots and talks about data in a positive way, instead of the common "people vs big corporation/government" type of fear based narrative. Highly recommended to anyone, and a must read for people interested in data!

The new oil

Maybe too long - a 25% editing trim would have helped. That said, there were plenty of interesting angles I hadn't considered and I'm happy I made the purchase. And that said, potential solutions to the many problems presented, even if they mostly do make sense, are internet light-years away from any practical implementation. In this respect, 'Data for the People' is more manifesto than users guide. I did like Weigend's take on the possible roll that data brokers and the data factories themselves could play to our benefit - refreshing after reading several 'baton down the hatches' approaches to personal data management.
