About this listen

The acclaimed author of The Teller of Secrets returns with a gut-wrenching, yet heartwarming, story about a young Ghanaian woman’s struggle to make a life in the US, and the challenges she must overcome.

Lola is twenty-one, and her life in Senegal couldn’t be better. An aspiring writer and university graduate, she has a great job, a nice apartment, a vibrant social life, and a future filled with possibility. But fate disrupts her world when she falls for Armand, an American Marine stationed at the U.S. Embassy. Her mother, a high court judge in Ghana, disapproves of her choice, but nothing will stop Lola from boarding a plane for Armand and America.

That fateful flight is only the beginning of an extraordinary journey; she has traded her carefree existence in Senegal for the perilous position of an undocumented immigrant in 1990s America.

Lola encounters adversity that would crush a less-determined woman. Her fate hangs on whether or not she’ll grow in courage to forge a different life from one she’d imagined, whether she’ll succeed in putting herself and family together again. Daughter in Exile is a hope-filled story about mother love, resilience, and unyielding strength.

Loveable main character

What a story. I felt Lola’s pain and wept with her but I was also inspired by her strength.

Vibrant narrative of the gut wrenching struggles of the black immigrant. Must read

Incredibly touching. What an illustration of the hardship, injustice and sacrifice immigrants go through. Women are superheroes. Immigrants are superheroes. One must travel to understand humanity across borders, it's differences, it's similarities. Kindness goes a long way. Faith and hope are the engine that keep one going.
I cried, I laughed, I lived every victory, every heartbreak, every step back with Lola. About to push replay. Yes, it was that good.

Couldn’t put it down.

The story held my interest and with twists and turns made me want to keep reading/listening to see what would happen next. The narrator is fabulous and convincingly steps into the voice of each of the characters. Well done.

Story of survival, ego and shame

This was a well written novel with a frustrating story. The main character was incredibly flawed and was driven by shame and ego. I found myself yelling at her as she would repeat mistakes. Honestly, I don’t think she won. She lived a life that she didn’t want driven by perceptions of success that were not her own.
Some of the character voices used by the narrator were nothing short of ridiculous. I found it comical and distracting.

Amazing story-telling of a unique and moving immigration journey.

The author is truly gifted and deserves 5 stars for this novel alone. The audible could have been better with a more appropriate and experienced reader... the accents and character depictions were extreme and did not do the story the justice it deserves. Nonetheless, it was such an amazing story! 100% recommend.

The story line was amazing !!! The struggle was real !

I wish the ending reflected the guy who brought her to the state. The ending leaves you wanting more.
