About this listen

As a young dragoneer moves through the ranks of the prestigious Serpentine Academy, her challenges grow greater and her time grows short to draw out a series of deadly threats, in this thrilling coming-of-age fantasy novel.

Sixteen-year-old Ileth is now an Apprentice Dragoneer, with all of the benefits and pitfalls that her elevation in rank entails. But her advancement becomes less certain after she's attacked by an unknown enemy, and Ileth begins to suspect that someone deadly may be hiding within the walls of the academy.

Outside of the walls there is a different challenge. The Rari Pirates are strangling the Vale Republic. What they lack in dragon firepower, they make up for in the brutality of their ever-expanding raids, making hostages or slaves of the Republic's citizens. Surrounded by enemies, Ileth will need to learn what kind of dragoneer she wants to be. And as she makes decisions about her future, Ileth will have the chance to uncover the secrets of her past. Both will irrevocably change the course of her life.

I loved it, it was a fanatic sequel. It was exciting the whole way through it. I will be listening to this again.

wonderful book

I greatly appreciate this second novel in the series and very much hope there will be a third. It’s been great to watch the main character grow, stumble, and find her own place amongst the humans and the dragons of the Serpentine.

Great continuation of the story

This was a fantastic read! I'm looking forward to any further books written in this series.

Fantastic!

This was a massive step up from Novice! The prose is still smooth as butter, the excellent supporting cast was present from the jump, and our heroine got the character development sorely missing from book one. It can be sluggish at times, but where the twisting, meandering nature of Novice made that book feel unfocused, here it feels lively and purposeful, with little details and setups having payoffs, big and small!

If the first book left you teetering on the fence, I hope this review pushes you over!

A Great Twisting Tale!

Bad things happen to her but they don't overwhelm her. She is kind and there are surprise rewards. Preformed well

Strong, smart, creative female main character

I very rarely enjoy a fantasy sequel as much as the first, but this story took established characters and gave them so much life and color. very fun.

This second installment of the serpentine Academy novel series was an excellent follow up to novice. Ilith, A young orphan girl from the north who has come south to become an apprentice dragoneer at the Serpentine receives a commission to return back to the North. She continues to meet new people who underestimate her because of a stutter, and she continues to follow her strong instincts to make her way through the commission. She also has a strong work ethic and a passion for dragons, and this helps her much along the way. The world building is solid, and I like that there continue to be other nations who have relationships with the republic. She eats some delicious food along the way (hoping Knight comes out with a companion Cookbook of the Republic lol). Also, some very fun imagery. I’ll be looking for some fan art on the costuming and dragon rigging and the Rari. If you like dragons, solid world-crafting and strong female leads, this series is highly recommended.

Dragons and strong women

this book was definitely not written by the author it is sold under. they're definitely had to be a ghostwriter for this one and it was definitely a woman because I have never encountered so many descriptions about every little thing. I don't care what anything looks like if there is no action behind you describing it! honestly you can skip about 95% of this book and get the gist of the story meaning it's not going anywhere and nothing will happen. this one's strong character is not going to be nothing but a wimp. so utterly disappointing after how entertaining the first story was. This book is a shame to the author's name.

95% of this book was descriptions, no action.
