Publisher's summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling duo, renowned archaeologist Nora Kelly and FBI Agent Corrie Swanson investigate a mystery so enigmatic it may have no solution.

In 2008, nine mountaineers failed to return from a winter backpacking trip in the New Mexico mountains. At their final campsite, searchers found a bizarre scene: something had appeared at the door of their tent so terrifying that it impelled them to slash their way out and flee barefoot to certain death in a blizzard. Despite a diligent search, only six bodies were found, two violently crushed and inexplicably missing their eyes. The case, given the code name “Dead Mountain” by the FBI, was never solved.

Now, two more bodies from the lost expedition are unexpectedly discovered in a cave, one a grisly suicide. Young FBI Agent Corrie Swanson teams up with archaeologist Nora Kelly to investigate what really happened on that fateful trip fifteen years ago—and to find the ninth victim. But their search awakens a long-slumbering evil, which pursues Corrie and Nora with a vengeance, determined to prevent the final missing corpse from ever coming to light.

Tragic that the narrator, ruined the listening experience

I adore all things Lincoln and Child! I am a huge fan, having read and listened to every single production thus far. This narrator was so hard to listen to, it almost stopped me from listening multiple times. Her pronunciation, inflection and tone were just awful. She exhales at the end of words, making male chars tors sound like east coast frat boys, and the female characters talk thru their noses. I had to fall back on my love for the authors many times! It was a great story, fun mysteries being solved and perfect movement thru the story line. I just wish with all of my heart they’d chosen a different voice.

2 things: i seldom read books by these authors BUT i jumped at this because the best book these
authors have done is White Fire @ 2013 which is also set in rural winterery Colorada.
BUT the authoes of this new
rural winterery Rockies setting mixed up 2 plots and lost their way...suspense wise. It uses the 1859 true story of the vanished 9
winter camping Russians experts
who also ran from safety after slicing
open the tent walls one night.
so
thing number 2: reads like any other average old suspense thriller. It is a good place to find a couple of hundred
cliches used in thrillers :-) this paer was fun. Read this for a relaxing
evening, collect the cliches for fun
then buy a copy of Wild Fire fot a gpod time.

Mild disappointment

My least favorite Preston and Child novel; believe I’ve read or listened to all of them. Story progressed more slowly than others. Narrator interpreted well but didn’t master the male voices well; I’m sure this can be a challenge but that’s the narrator’s job and she fell short.

Exciting, but lacks the riveting details of previo

How could I not finish this novel? A new book by my favourite authors!! I'm a way, the plot and details are reminiscent of previous works. Interesting and action packed! For a new reader it would be a treat!

Good story; distracting narrator

The story was good and solid albeit ending weak. I wasn’t going to listen to this book at first because of the narrators voice. I have read every one of their books and this is the second time they have picked a narrator who was distracting at best. Awful rendition of males. Corrie is supposed to be growing in her character, confidence and ability as an agent. She is portrayed as weak at times and her voice is just silly and childlike. Nora has the only normal sounding voice.
Regardless I will continue to be supporters of their books and stories!!!!!

These books are dangerous

If you start listening to this book, your life will not be your own. You’ll eat, sleep, and breathe New Mexico. Bring a coat. The minutiae of your life will fade away until the book is over, then there is the period of mourning. Expect that to last a week.
All in all, give it a miss and go back to doing the dishes. The psychological jet lag is a bear.

Look forward to this series every year!

Another good book in this series although the story at times resembles real life events. Regardless, a very good twist and great story telling by Cynthia Farrell. One of the best voices to listen to. Looking forward to the next one already!
