About this listen

Introducing a remarkable new character from number-one New York Times best-selling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat...and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it....

such a silly story

hauling a nuclear missile down the Grand canyon and stashing it in a cave makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I was very disappointed in this book.

Baldacci's best

Having 22 Baldacci audio books, this is one on the best. Excellent narration kept the story interesting and exciting. Atlee Pine is a terrific and refreshing character of Baldacci story and one of his best since Oliver Stone aka. John Carr. And I can't wait for the next. Highly recommended to any Baldacci fan or anyone looking for a terrific action thriller.

Male Voice Not Needed

Enjoyed the story even though it was a real stretch. The female narrator is great. She should do the male characters as well. The male narrator sounds dull and weird. I listen to audiobooks a lot on my commute and always hate when I get a book with multiple narrators. Howeve, this is one of the worst.

Excellent new series

I've listened to many of Baldacci's books and this new series has to be one of my favorites! To start, the narration is amazing. In addition to that, I love the female protagonist. Atlee's backstory has a lot more to give for the future of this series.

Go Special Agent Pine!

while not as much intrigue as other Balduci characters, I enjoyed reading / hearing a good tale with a female lead. SA Pine is one heck of a fighter and all around enforcer! Best was the fight scenes!

Mediocre- The storyline was good, but the writing so-so.

As stated the storyline was good, but some of the writing was amateurish. The worst part was the narration. The male voice sounded like he voiced over the Disney character Goofy as a second job. It really was that bad.

Great story, very timely.

While not generally a fan of dual narrators, the male and female readers fit this story perfectly. Baldacci at his usual brilliance. FBI SA Pine is a welcome addition to the genre's stable of kick-ass heros. Looking forward to her future adventures and intrigues.

Nice New Storyline

Enjoyable offering by Mr. B. Though the premise is not altogether unfamiliar, “attractive tough woman saves the world”, the new characters are a welcome addition and the reviewer is looking forward to the next release in the series.

Pretty good

The principle characters of the book were well developed and should have a long shelf-life for sequels. However, the story line of rogue government officials planting a small nuclear weapon to precipitate a war has been used several times before by other authors. As such, much of the action was very predictable.
