About this listen

City girl Poppy desperately wants to pay off her debts, quit her dead-end job, find her father...oh, and keep a plant alive. But she knows that these are just hopeless dreams - until the day a letter arrives. Suddenly, Poppy is on a train heading deep into the English countryside to claim a mysterious inheritance. And the last thing she expects to receive is a cottage garden nursery - complete with romantic climbing roses, scented herbs, a bossy, talkative ginger cat...and a dead body.

Now, she must solve the mystery or risk losing her new home and the chance for a fresh start. But who would want to murder a gardener in a sleepy little village? Could a reclusive inventor have something to do with the killing? What about the brooding crime author next door? And why is her long-lost cousin so desperate for her to sell the cottage?

Poppy might not know her pansies from her petunias, but that doesn't stop her digging for clues. The only problem is - she could be digging her own grave, too....

I have read and listen to many cosy crime novels, and know many times one can't expect a full suspense or Agatha Christie type of plot. However, I feel this title is really on the thin plot and weak storyline. The murderer was a give away very early on, and while there were many lovely supporting characters, the author failed to develop them, hopefully as the series progresses, she would build them up. The main character Poppy was annoying at times with her naivety, but generally likeable. I hope to see her grow with the series too.

I like the narration very much. The narrator had a lovely voice, and did a wonderful job of giving each character a distinct voice which kind of help build their image. She would voice little things like a sigh, smirk, or laugh which I don't often find in other books. She was the saving grace of this audio book, in my personal opinion.

Despite my issues with the storyline, I would still give this series a chance, and try out the next title.

Thin plot, but lovely narration

I really like how the main character isn't leaning on the support of a strong controlled man. I love Devin, and esp James... but this new relationship we see with her and the female Detective is nice. of course we want her to fall in love. but it's a nice combination she has to work with.
can't imagine any one else reading aHannah book.

hannah and pearl are excellent.

This was a very enjoyable book to listen to. The narrative did an great job without over doing it. The storyline felt very organic not forced. I will be reading others in the series.

Delightful

The story overall I like well enough, but I was left wondering how old Poppy was supposed to be throughout. I assume in her early 20s but honestly she most often seems to be very young. If I didn't know better I'd assume she's around 12 or so. Maybe it's supposed to be taken as endearing naivety, but she comes off a bit childish. Maybe I'm just jaded! But I loved Oren and Bertie is such a doll. I'll keep on and hope she grows up a bit!

Intriguing...

Nice setting. Likable characters. Great for young or old sleuths and animal lovers. Main character, Poppy, was delightful! Hard luck didn’t bog her down. She was kind, strong, resilient & grateful. Thoroughly enjoyed her, along with a kookie elderly inventor neighbor.

Narrator was perfect in every category. I’m hearing impaired and have trouble with accents. I heard this narrator clearly. (I have, also, found horse shoe neck set speakers to work great with the audio books and loud highway driving.)

Fun Cozy Mystery

This was a fairly enjoyable light read. The performance was excellent. I didn't like Poppy, though. She's unwilling to stand up for herself unless the situation is desperate. She also makes weird choices, like buying a sandwich for lunch when she can't afford a coffee on the way to work. Why not pack a lunch if she's that desperate? Not sure I'll be reading the next book just because of the main character.

Not a Poppy fan
