They’ll either find salvation or face damnation.
Screams of agony. Cries of terror. The sounds of a dying civilization echo all around Josh Standing as he navigates the aftermath of this new post-apocalyptic world. All traces of modern advancements have been wiped away by the supernova EMP when he washes ashore on the Georgia coast. Alone.
And when a psychotic gang takes Josh prisoner, he’s torn between grief and gratitude that his daughter isn’t discovered nearby. Josh swore long ago to serve and protect, and he desperately wants to help the other prisoners, but his daughter needs him, too. If she’s still alive.
Circumstances are only slightly better for Josh’s wife Maxine and their cancer-stricken son as they settle at the family farm in West Virginia. There, they discover Maxine’s beloved mother has been heavily effected with the aftereffects of the supernova, and her battle-hardened father is struggling to keep the family together. Even worse, a local militia is targeting the farm for its resources, which causes further dissension in the family over how to handle the attacks.
When the dust from the firefights settle, the choice between duty and family will be the difference in who is left standing. Prepper survivalist author Grace Hamilton invites you to step into a post-apocalyptic, EMP-ravaged world filled with strong, resourceful characters, survivalist knowledge, and edge-of-your seat action.
Note: This novel contains violence.

Craziness, selfishness, and the ties of family motivate characters that are vibrantly real.
Of course, like most books in her EMP series, there is significant overlap in events and themes. It’s really best to read the books in order. It’s also best to understand what you’re going to get: character studies against a common plot and themes. Oh, and some promotion of “traditional” family values around Huns, prepares, sex before marriage and the like.
Overall, another engaging installment!

An outstanding performance by Matt Weight, he captures the nuances of the characters and the intensity of the scenes, literally breathing life into the story. Overall, Deep End is a very entertaining listen with loads of action, one I'll recommend. I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This second book of the series picks up immediately after the cliffhanger from Book 1. Maxine and Storm have made it to her parents' ranch in West Virginia, where they must fight those that would take what they have. Josh, Tally and Poppet have crashed the lifeboat from the Seahawk and become separated from each other. Josh and Poppet are captured by a sadistic group of criminals, while Tally escapes that fate and joins up with Henry. Will they all make it to reunite in West Virginia?
I find the supernova's effects on people to be intriguing. Josh is trying to puzzle out what's happened and is given a few tantalizing clues. Will anyone be able to explain it and will they be able to reverse it?
The book has a lot of post-apocalyptic action and violence. Hamilton adds a good amount of tension and suspense into the story. The reader will stay riveted until the end.
I enjoy Hamilton's handling of the characters. The Stalling family are real and relatable. Some of the situations they're in are fairly implausible, but I'm OK with it if the characters learn and grow from the experience.
There is a pet peeve in this book that drives me crazy. There is a cliffhanger. The book ends in the middle of a scene; no semblance of completion at all. I don't mind having a few thematic threads continuing to the next book, but there should definitely be a satisfactory ending to each installment.
Narration by Matt Weight is good. Sometimes his cadence seems odd but his interpretation of dialogue is a highlight.
Recommended.

However, this book does something I absolutely hate in that it doesn't come to some sort of conclusion but ends on a cliff-hanger to sell the next book in the series.
Don't do that. Cliffhangers for chapters are good, but if you don't leave the characters in a place that's at least 'stable' while you write the next book, I as a reader feel cheated. Stories are supposed to end not just stop.
I received a copy of this book at my request in exchange for a fair review.
