About this listen

The lights go out. Cars stall. Communications fail. Cities descend into chaos.

An EMP attack leaves single-father Will Fontenot and his son stranded in Houston, Texas. It's an all-out battle for survival.

Wracked with guilt and struggling with PTSD from the accident that took his wife's life, he'll do whatever it takes to get his son out of the city. But an encounter with two injured women hurls them into a deadly game of cat and mouse and puts all their lives at risk.

It's a race against time as the plot to bring America to her knees unfolds in this fast-paced post-apocalyptic EMP-survival thriller.

Glad I Stuck With It

This series was on my list for a long time before I finally listened to it all the way through. The thing that held me back was the way Will kept mentioning his guilt and blaming himself for an accident that had killed his wife a few years prior to the start of this series. I truly felt for the guy and his son but I have too many of my own issues to want to listen to a fictional character fail to process his. A real life person, sure, especially if I could help them carry the burden, but a fictional one, not so much.

However, once I realized that I could skip 15 seconds ahead every now and then to move past the worst of this poor guy's moments self recrimination, I finally began to enjoy the book. And, I'm happy to report that these moments do become less and less frequent as the book, and especially the series, continues.

Bottom line: you can get away with skipping ahead 10 or 15 seconds (the amount of time is configurable in the Audible player settings) every now and then during the first few chapters to move past the frequent bouts of self loathing. Once the story starts to pick up the pace, I think you'll find it easier to listen to and well worth your efforts.

How quickly society broke down

Way too much of Will worried son. We get it. Over and over blah blah blah

Really enjoyed it

Great start to the series. The characters are just getting themselves used to all the changes. I have high hopes for the rest of the series. I enjoyed the last T.L. Payne series I read too

Solid start to this series!

Sort of a cool concept of dual issues going on at the same time. Looking forward to the rest!

It was a bit slow

The story lacked apocalyptic elements. It felt like the storm was it. I needed more.

Voice actor is horrible

Story was pretty good, there were some discontinuities, but no glaring holes. I liked it. The voice actor on the other hand, is one of the worst I’ve heard. Every voice sounds like a whiny Bond villain and his “yelling” voice sounds absolutely ridiculous. It was hard to listen to.

Loved the book and the narrator

T. L. Payne was an awesome find. I finished a series by another author, and T. L. was a suggested author to try. I'm glad I followed that suggestion, otherwise I might not have ever come across her.
I loved the book and the narrator.
I'm on to book 2 in this series!

Great series!

I found this box set on audible on a whim and loved all of it! Easy to follow, great story, clean writing, and great narration. I’m currently trying to get through one of the most-recommended post-apocalyptic/prepper books and struggling because it’s not nearly as entertaining as this series and is way more vulgar than I expected. Thank you for setting my standard high and creating content that is actually enjoyable and not super cringey!

Post apocalyptic masterpiece

This beginning to the Fall of Houston series is another, edge of your seat storyline. The author draws you in with stress, anger, love, and even hope. It is a must read in this series.
