About this listen

When you delete your adjectives, who are you?

Most people limit themselves to their labels. They embrace barriers based on the box that society puts them in. But your adjectives aren’t your destiny.

In Delete the Adjective: A Soldier’s Adventures in Ranger School, Lisa Jaster proves your merit should always trump your labels. Lisa didn’t confine herself to the adjectives of “middle-aged” or “female.” Instead, she became one of the first three women to graduate from the United States Army Ranger program. For those six months in the program, her adjectives didn’t matter. What mattered was that she slept on the same forest ground as her peers (typically twenty-three-year-old men on active duty). She ran the same mock missions and battle drills. She demonstrated the fortitude of a Ranger.

Delete the Adjective relives Lisa’s experiences, written in the field notebook every student in Ranger School carries. Throughout the Ranger course, Lisa proved that mettle breaks down any barriers society might place on you.

Exactly What I Was Hoping For

A life-changing book for anyone in the military, regardless of your adjectives. Being able to demonstrate kindness, compassion, and high spirits in the face of grueling adversity demonstrates Lisa’s intelligence throughout Ranger School. Mix that with some kicka** determination, lethality, and tactical know-how, and you’ve got a real Ranger and a riveting story.

Engaging!

Story is believable! I was born in an era where, when declaring, "I want to be a fighter pulot," the response was, "You can't do that, you're a girl!" This book makes me PROUD that there are women who can not only meet, but EXCEED the standards set for men. These exceptional ladies should not be held back from service, when MERIT meets or exceeds a proven standard.

Emotional story, worthy of emulation

You think you know a person, and then you hear what they went through.
Lisa’s story is one that more people need to hear: it’s not just her no-quit attitude. It’s not the 6 months in a 9 week school. It’s the not giving up when there was ample opportunities to do so. It’s the “okay suck it up and complete the mission” attitude that she embodied during her time in the school. It’s not the moments where she was low: it’s the making everyone around her better. Including me. Thanks Lisa!

Leaders, military and civilian: READ THIS BOOK

I have previously read Delete the Adjective in hard copy, but it’s possible I enjoyed now Lt Col Jaster’s book even more in hard copy. As a former NCO and current LE leader who just so happens to be a woman and a mom, her story really resonates (though she’s more high speed than I’ll ever be). This book motivates me to keep learning and developing as a leader and person. Hell, it motivates me so much it makes me want you to re-up!

Bad Ass in My Book

How do I write a review about this book without writing a book? Five stars all the way around. This book isn’t simply a story written for the sake of publishing a book. Everything I know about Lisa lines up with what is written in these pages or heard on the audible version.

Lisa, that saying, “I’d go to war alongside you any day in any fox hole with you.

Quick and Easy Listen, Humorous!

Lisa tells her story in a humorous way, making fun of herself appropriately when things fell short of expectations.

Lisa calls out Army policy and biases and points out many known truths that sadly exist TODAY.

The most hurtful part of her story is that this happened recently. When Lisa tells parts of this story - you think it happened in 1960... but not so much.

Add these adjectives: Inspiring; Authentic; Exemplary.

Delete the Adjective: A Soldier's Adventures in Ranger School is an inspiring read that challenges us to look beyond the adjectives that (we think) define us. This book tells Lisa Jaster's incredible story of becoming one of the first women to graduate from the US Army Ranger School. And how she used her determination, grit, patience, and passion to break down barriers along the way. Through field notes taken during Ranger School, this book provides a unique, transparent perspective of her experience and how she overcame obstacles and made change one person at a time. This book is an inspiring reminder that we should always put our mettle before our labels. And the author has a great reading voice!
