About this listen

A woman’s impression of her family is dismantled by revelations of the past in a haunting story about identity, memories, and the power of secrets by the New York Times bestselling author of Black Cake.

One year after her mother’s death, a woman prepares to celebrate her fortieth birthday. Digging through a trunk in the attic, looking for keepsakes for the occasion, she discovers photographs that call into question everything she believed about her life. The truth is a different story—one of a little girl in danger, a lie, and a mother’s love so fierce it led her to do the unimaginable.

Charmaine Wilkerson’s Deluge is part of Good Intentions, a riveting collection of stories about the instincts, fears, and fierce love inherent in motherhood from award-winning, bestselling authors. Read or listen to each in a single sitting.

I was not disappointed!

I pre-ordered Charmaine Wilkerson's new short story "Deluge" and read it (actually listened to the audiobook) the day I got it. I wasn't disappointed. As in her novel Black Cake, which I love, she's written about family secrets and secrets held back from other family members. Here's my favorite quote from the story: "There aren't many secrets in this world, just people who choose to look the other way." Wilkerson is also skilled at smoothly weaving back and forth through time, slowly revealing secrets. Bravo, @ ! You've done it again! I'm looking forward to your next release.

great short

Audible has curated a collection of short stories called “Good Intentions” which is a collection of stories about the instincts, fears, and fierce love inherent in motherhood. “Deluge” by Charmaine Wilkerson examines identity and motherhood. A woman’s identity is unmoored when she stumbles across an old photograph which nudges a memory. From that memory, all she knows about herself unravels. Wilkerson packs a wallop in this short story.

Good Short read

Lively sad story. I get how she felt , however I feel for Steppy! He loved her like his own is the heartbreaking part.

Left Me Dizzy

The story was a gripping one but it jumped between present tense, past tense and future tense way too much without any fluidity. I felt for Dina and Steppy, but I wish it would have been better written.

Great short story

I truly enjoyed this story. Sometimes life just has missing pieces and you’re not whole until your story is complete.

Love story line

Loved story line, but wish it were a dull book with more details. The characters were relatable and have a full detailed book to know what was uncovered about her biological family would have been great reading.

Interesting Story

Definitely held my attention. The ending was sad for me. I was able to somewhat identify with Dinara’s feelings about family. I learned later in life that my Dad who raised me was not my biological dad. Questions and emotions still plague me to this day and I struggle sometimes.

A Deluge Of Memories

I suppose this short story is aptly titled. The main character does experience a deluge of memories without adhering to any discernible timeline. It came off as meta and slightly artsy. I do enjoy that style but it was still difficult to follow. It probably would've worked better in full length novel format. I liked it nonetheless.

How ungrateful people can be…

This was a well written book, full of lilting and lovely words. The story was that of an entitled and ungrateful woman. One who despite being loved, turns on a dime and betrays those who love her.
It grated on my nerves and while the writing was good, the story was not my cup of tea or coffee.
