Publisher's summary

A mother makes a heartbreaking choice in this unforgettable story about devotion and sacrifice in World War II-era France by the New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Lost Names.

Marie Vachon experiences firsthand the devastation of the German invasion when she takes in a Jewish refugee named Josiane. A loving, if temporary, home for the displaced child. A second chance at motherhood for Marie. After three years, an inseparable bond is created. It’s one that leads Marie and Josiane to an inevitable but surprising reckoning that calls into question what motherhood means—and where it ends.

Kristin Harmel’s The Road Home is part of Good Intentions, a riveting collection of stories about the instincts, fears, and fierce love inherent in motherhood from award-winning, bestselling authors. Read or listen to each in a single sitting.

Life Continues

What a poignant story. Life continues, even when we are powerless over the things that hurt us. Life continues, even when we can't know the future.

Beautiful written!

A beautiful short story written by the fabulous Kristin Harmel, only available on Audible.

Another story that puts you in a place no parent would ever want to be in; yet, gives hope, love, and gratitude for the good in humanity.

An unseen ending that beautifully envelopes grief and joy simultaneously.

Well done Kristin Harmel!

Very Touching Story

No one knows what the future looks like. Good things happen. Bad things happen. And life carries on; it moves forward. This is an installment in the Good Intentions series all of which are stand alone and around an hour. This story centers around a mother who has lost her only son during the Second World War . She and her husband are asked to take in a Jewish 3 yo girl.

Heart rending

This is a touching vignette of the French in and after WW2. Like so many wartime stories it concerns the emotional depths and heights taking place far from the front. Beautifully told by a French narrator - the mother.

It's nice, sad. but too short.

I don't read short stories as they feel unfinished= this follows in that vein. It's like half a story or almost a story. It's a good opening, but not enough of a story for me to love it. It's surprising, but doesn't really stand out in any way. It's pretty typical genre fiction.
