About this listen

For almost a hundred years, Hadrian Marlowe has served the empire in its war against the Cielcin, a vicious alien race bent on humanity's destruction. Rumors of a new king among the Cielcin have reached the imperial throne. This one is not like the others. It does not raid borderworld territories, preferring precise, strategic attacks on the humans' empire.

To make matters worse, a cult of personality has formed around Hadrian, spurred on by legends of his having defied death itself. Men call him Halfmortal. Hadrian's rise to prominence proves dangerous to himself and his team, as those within the imperial government distrust or resent his new influence.

Caught in the middle, Hadrian must contend with enemies before him and behind.

And above it all, there is the mystery of the Quiet. Hadrian did defy death. He did return. But the keys to the only place in the universe where Hadrian might find the answers he seeks lie in the hands of the emperor himself....

Epic

Really enjoying this series and I usually hate everything. The pacing is good and the characters are engaging. There have been a lot of places in this series where I thought they need a better editor, though. Places where the text seems to double back on itself and repeat a line from the previous sentence. Like saying a soldier screamed before an alien snatched him so fast he didn't have time to scream. The narrator is an excellent actor with great pacing. But he should look up the words he doesn't know. Tousling, ensign, De Leon, among others. I see someone clued him in eventually about how to say the Princess's name, but he waffles a lot about another character, which was confusing as a listener.

That said, I think it's a really engaging story read by a talented actor with lots of potential. I would listen to this again in the future.

Favorite scifi novel I have read so far!

Perfectly executed story and performance, no criticism from me, other than why aren’t more people talking about it! Must read!

Demon in White

Great book, great narration. This is a phenomenal series. If you’re three books in then you already know that. Most people rate Demon in White above Howling Dark. I’m the opposite. I think book 2 was slightly better. That being said, I enjoy this story immensely. Can’t wait to start book 4.

One of the best in the series

I felt like the pace picked up a little bit more in this book than the other two. The supporting characters were flushed out a little bit more to which was nice.

Keeps getting better and better

So much to like in this one! I really feel like Ruocchio has arrived at where he wanted to go with this story. There is great worldbuilding with fascinating history, there is political intrigue, large scale action and well executed character development. Relationships have meaning by now, we care for the cast, not just the MC. Pacing is so much better than in book 1. It certainly still is a slow burn, but never boring.
I‘ve come to accept and life with my two pet peeves: 1) autobiographical narrator that remembers every detail, word and emotion after literally over 1000 years, 2) all cultural/historical (even zoological) references are to our current past, even though the narration happens like 20‘000 years in our future. Other than those two immersion breakers: chef’s kiss.
Performance: after really struggling with the narrator early on I’ve come a long way. What helped me, I believe, was turning the speed up to 1,1x, something I usually never do. It really helped me with this to the point where I actually will give 4 stars to Mr Roukin.
Looking forward to book 4!

Three 5 star books in one!!

Just as the review title says.

This has 3 complete stories, what could have been 3 seperate books in the series all smushed pinto one volume. And each section is 5 stars.

Best of the series

After coming off of mid reviews of the first two books in the series, this one was a home run. The authors writing is much better and the pacing doesn’t drag anymore.
He reaps the benefits of the previous two books’ set up and it all works wonderfully.
There was a few chapters that were confusing- one felt intentionally so and one not so much, but overall great experience and I’m happy to have pushed through the first 1.5 books to experience this in full glory.

I will say that while this book came first in publishing order, there are a lot of references to a story he would later write in the first Tales of the Suneater short story series that may be helpful to read first.
