About this listen

From USA Today best-selling author A.M. Madden comes a sexy, heartwarming, young-adult, stand-alone spin-off novel from the Back-Up series.

We were destined. How could we not be? Our dads were famous rock stars and best friends. As a kid, I practically lived at his house. We did everything together. My first kiss at only nine. I knew I’d marry him one day. Took my virginity on prom night. Wrote songs about me. Was sweet and kind, loving and caring. The sun rose and set on him. I trusted him with my heart. And he loved me.

With my dad’s help, my love became a talented bass player. He was destined to find fame. I wanted that for him. And then it happened. The opportunity to tour with one of the hottest rock stars around. Thirteen weeks wasn’t long to be apart. Not in the grand scheme of things. Except I had no idea who I was without him. He got his wish - and I lost myself. Maybe we weren’t so destined after all.

It just was flat

I love the Devils Lair and Treys books but this one just doesn't hold its weight. It felt juvenile with sex scenes sprinkled in and normally that doesn't bother me but listening about the lives of spoiled rich kids and their "issues" just had me skipping chapter after chapter and you know what, I didn't miss a thing. It got to the point to where I couldn't wait for the book to be over with already and that's never a good thing.

Fantastic Story & Narration🎧 Gripping & Heartfelt!

I am a huge fan of rock star romance novels and am asking myself how the heck did I not listen to this series, so yes I am late to the Lair party but I will rectify that ASAP. That said, I loved this book, though this is the end of the series I was able to enjoy it as a standalone, never feeling lost or like I was missing anything at all. A.M. Madden is a gifted author with a wonderful writing style, her descriptive details brought me into the story right alongside the characters, allowing me to see, hear and feel what the characters were feeling. The character development and world building in phenomenal, I am looking forward to visiting this rockstar world again soon. This book features Shane Lair, who is the son of Jackson and Leila, and Alivia Taylor, daughter of Camila and Trey. The two have known each since they were kids, they were close then and got even closer over the years, they both knew they were it for each other even then. But adulthood brings on opportunities and challenges that test not their relationship. Alivia starts to second guess if she is holding Shane back, questioning if he is going to college because she is and not because he wants to. She knows he is a rockstar in the making and an opportunity lands in his lap that has the potential to push start his career. Shane does not want the perks that come with being a musician, he only wants Alivia and he has to remind her of that when her insecurities get the best of her. This is a fabulous coming of age, young adult/new adult romance novel, it is a beautifully plotted story with plenty of drama, heartfelt emotions, some angst, humor and some hot romance. It was great to watch these two come into their own, I loved the relationship of their parents and the camaraderie amongst them. I am sure I will revisit this book again after I finish with all the earlier books set in this world. A.M. Madden, thank you for this fabulous story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the wonderful narration, John Lane is a talented narrator and a voice artist. He did a great job brining the characters and their story to life. He set the perfect tone for the story, captured the character’s emotions and projected them into his performance. He is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for another great listen.

Young Love

This one had me feeling more angsty than any in my recent past. Everything in their relationship early one was going so well I kept waiting for the big mess up that would ruin everything. For me, it was a nail biter to see if they’d make it to their HEA. Wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the narration at first, but it subtly grew on me. Great series!

Wonderful narration to a great story

This is book 4 in the Lair series which is a spin off series of the authors The Back-up series. It has been seven years since the release of the first book Back-up and having been a fan of the series it was great to have the story of two original band members' kids. Shane Liar (son of Jack and Leila Lair) and Alivia Taylor (daughter of Trey and Camilla Taylor) grew up together and always saw themselves together and this is their story of if they are truly destined to be together or not.
It is told in both Shane and Alivia’s point of view and John Lane did a wonderful job in narrating both. It did take this listener a few chapters getting used to a male narrating the entire book, but the narrator pulled it off. He really brought the laughs, tears and every emotion in between to the story bringing it to life.
With that said this story shows us friendship, love, family support and what seemed like a simple thing really had so much more. Things we didn’t even think about on finding oneself, the author really hit the spot. I loved being able to catch up with the Liar and Taylor family as well. My only thing is I wish the ending was a tad longer, covering a little more during that time in the last two chapters. Yes things were wrapped up with Shane and Alivia but it felt somewhat rushed and I wished there was another chapter. The point of views in the final chapter were a pleasant surprise and a great way to end the book but I feel like something was missing from this great listen.
I am looking forward to more from this author and will be on the lookout for other books narrated by this narrator and would love to see what he can do with a dual narration.
