About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Second to none in her ability to make detective stories, Georgette Heyer is queen of the genre.

Slumped on a seat under an oak tree is old Sampson Warrenby, with a bullet through his brain. He is discovered by his anxious niece, Mavis, who is just one of the 10 people in the village in the running for chief suspect, having just cause to dislike Warrenby intensely. Only Chief Inspector Hemingway can uncover which of the 10 has turned hatred into murder.

So happy to find this with a good narrator. All her Golden Age detective stories are gems.

Love Heyer’s mysteries

I love Georgette Heyer’s detective stories and this one has some good points although it is not my favorite. But the narration is grating, especially the voice done for Charles. Why make him sound like some sort of British surfer dude? It is an odd choice. The rest of the characters are fine but that one is difficult to listen to.

Good book, strange narration

I like GH's books because they don't need sex or violence to make them interesting. The stories are very good and keep me interested.

The way the narrator absolutely nailed every voice.

If you like Christie, listen to this mystery set in early 20th century England. Classic who-done-it with an excellent story and characters. Well read and produced.
