About this listen
Sometimes, in order to change the world, you have to change yourself.
Karin Makos is not herself anymore. Powerful, psychopathic, with abilities that can rend the very fabric of the universe apart, and a new revenge-driven personality occupying her mind, she is constantly riding the line between patience and violence.
But she has a universe to save, and a limited time in which to do it.
With allies and enemies blurring together in the wings, she will fight her way through to the finish. And damn anyone who tries to stop her.

When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

In the beginning, the gods destroyed the world. Five hundred years later, things haven’t gotten much better for humans. The demigods that were left behind to guard over humanity have been using them as fodder for an endless civil war between themselves, and the humans just go on dutifully slaughtering each other, battle after battle. It’s not all bad, though. Perry McGown makes his living off those bloody, stinking battlefields. He works on a crew that reclaims all the spent shell casings. But if anyone found out that he was a deserter from the war, he’d be executed for heresy.

It is the second stage of human colonization - the first age, humanity's initial attempt to people the stars, ended in disaster when it was discovered that Earth's original superluminal drive did permanent genetic damage to all who used it - mutating Earth's far-flung colonists in mind and body. Now, one of Earth's first colonies has given humanity back the stars, but at a high price - a monopoly over all human commerce.

Deus is the final of a truly inspired series!!
Before you read on, please note, that whilst there are NO spoilers for ‘Deus’, there are spoilers for Books 1-5.
Deus is everything you want in a series final and more. With Karin having gone from Project Eos, morphing to an embodiment of Project Eurynome, with mods, she is now something that not even Nomiki or John could stand up to.
With powers that are now truly like one of the old Mythological Gods, Karin is on the war path, to not only find Dr Evangeline Sasha and stop her, along with her son Tylanus, who she is using to change his own realm of Tartarus into a new ‘Shadow Realm’ that she will force onto Earth’s Realm, basically killing every living being in the process, and at the same time, creating a new ‘Shadowverse’ that she can mold into her own vision.
But she has not foreseen Karin Makos coming to stop her, this psychopathic new version of Karin, stripped of her conscience, her values, to a large extent, her humanity, she has been remade into ‘Eurynome’, with a reduced, logical Fear, and other emotions only there to help her on a logical, clinical, or help her make various decisions. The rest stripped to make room for additional programs and Tia.
Without giving anything away, (I really don’t want to spoil just how exceptional this book is, and how amazing this final chapter is), but at the start of this book, the team is still trying to come to terms with the new Karin, and they are sending her on ‘warrior’ missions, but they are not utilising her for her true power, nor using her to hunt Sasha, and this is where the book gets interesting.
This is not just a Sci-Fi story, but an intense Psychological Thriller, with some brutally violent scenes of psychopathic behaviour, as Karin learns the bounds of her new skills and mental abilities. It is a complex, very gritty portrayal of psychotic behaviour, psychological warfare, as well as giving us this in-depth look at what is going on within Karin’s mind with this constant dialogue between her and her Eurynome ‘add-on’ Tia. The Character writing in these parts of the book, is just truly Masterful, and shows the Gorman is capable of writing some extraordinary material that is just amazing, and awe-inspiring.
Added to this, is this constant Mythological element of the Greek Deities, which makes for such a fascinating, creative and clever world building aspect of the story. The Author has put a lot of effort into creating each of the Characters, and making sure that the character fits the template of the Greek Deity that they have been crafted to portray. Some are intellectual, such as Athena, who is all about strategy, or Artemis, all about Wisdom, but they did not create this program without thinking of the war effort, and their first efforts into Enyo and Ares showed how vicious these projects can be.
It is the more esoteric projects that are really fascinating, such as Karin’s project Eos – Bringer of Dawn – at first the very start, her abilities, to produce light, seem almost a little pointless (unless you need a good nightlight), but as you dig down into the Goddess of Eos, you find that she is not only a creation Goddess which has ‘interesting’ ramifications, there is this extraordinary ability to not only defeat Shadow attacks, but remove them from people who have been turned to lost. This comes up with certain other Pantheons as well in the story, the Mythology is just utterly captivating and would make for a compelling guide book to the series.
When you combine the Mythology with the Tech, the Science (and obviously the Sci-Fi in some aspects), you get ‘Galaxy/World’ building that is not just beautiful, and breathtaking in how clever it is, and the detail, the complexity and just the sheer (quite literally), multi-dimensional layers, but it is also totally enthralling. The World Building is so real, with some powerfully intense and deeply disturbing symbolism to bring the story to life, but it is done with total respect, and in a way that is not over done, and also makes the story so superior for its addition. There are some scenes though, that are just so amazing, that they leave you in total admiration for the skill of Gorman’s writing.
I loved the concepts of the bio-tech, and the integration of Technology and Mythology in this series, it really brought this story to life, giving it so many additional layers. The addition of ‘Tia’ to Karin’s character at the end of the last book was just brilliant, and now, as ‘Eurynome’, rather than just ‘Eos’, Karin is something that we have just not seen before.
Tia’s Character is such a fascinating (and gruesome) construct, a brain and nerve stem, left in fluid for over 70yrs and hooked up to machinery to keep her alive. The concept of it is both inspired, and just stunning in a medical and technological sense, but then you consider what they did to ‘Tia’ to get her to that state, and you both cringe, and feel like ‘No Thanks’, and just total dread at the same thing happening to you. And then the concept of transferring part of that to Karin, this is a whole new level of both imagination, but also technological and medical genius. Of course, this leaves Karin a complete psychopath, with little to no feelings, it takes Karin’s character, who is normally such an emotional and loving caring character, and not only kind of turns her into Nomiki, Project Enyo, but surpasses her, and completely corrupts her psychologically, and what is worse, due to her own special and unique abilities, and where all of the ‘Projects’ come from, Karin is able to become ‘EURYNOME’, and this gives her access to abilities that she never even dreamed of, and turns her into a weapon more dangerous and deadly than anything that has been created before, well, except for maybe one.
Karin, the crew of the Nemina, and everyone involved not only have to go after Sasha, but they also discover that there is a much bigger threat out there, something that makes even Eurynome Karin have to sit up and take notice, and this is where the story REALLY picks up a notch. This is the final to end all finals, and it is done so well, if you have read this series, you are going to be in utter astonishment and awe of how this ends.
One of the truly spectacular parts of this book, has been the combat scenes, Gorman has done such an exceptional job throughout the series, but in this final parts of the series (part 5 included), She really steps it up a gear. I kind of compare it to when I saw “Rogue One, A Star Wars Story” for the first time, and the total Amazement at the ‘Hall Monitor of the Galaxy’ Award scene that went to Vader in the Rebel Ship, and how some of the scenes in this book have left me with the same amount of stunned surprise they have been done so well. The words ‘Brutal, Gritty, Powerful’ do not do justice to the sheer awe that you feel as you read the scenes in which Karin discovers her new abilities and unleashes herself on those who oppose her. I can only imagine the fun that Gorman had writing this book, knowing the joy she was going to give all of us reading it.
This has been an incredible series, and if you think back to the very first book, and the initial ‘Shadow’ incursion, were Karin, Marc and Soo-Jin were attacked by Shadows aboard the Nemina, to where they are now in this final book, and the journey they have had to take to get here, and how engaged we have become with these characters, you realise just how inspired the writing is, and how exceptional Gorman is as an Author.
This is one of those series that you just can’t miss, doesn’t matter what you read, the evolution of the Characters is so remarkable, the world building, and the mythology is just so incredible, so detailed and multi-faceted, and the story is so inspired, taking you and the Characters on this extraordinary journey, as one woman strives to understand her abilities, and in the process, save the galaxy, you will not only be utterly engaged and enthralled, but you will have so much fun reading it, and be so satisfied by the ending.
This is one of those series that will be around for a long time, and should win awards it is so good.
Andrea Emmes has such a lovely voice, she is lovely to listen to, and you can just get lost in her beautiful voice, and listen to her for hours. She has the perfect voice for Karin, soft spoken and delicate, but with that buried strength, she does a perfect voice for her. The amazing thing is, she does such a wonderful voice for Nomiki as well – so powerful.
Each of her voices for each of the Characters, Male or Female were wonderful, bringing this story to life, and making it an epic masterpiece to listen to. This is such a brilliant story, and Emmes has managed to only improve on it, by bringing the characters to life (with such consummate ease), and allowing us to sit back and just indulge in what is a true Masterpiece of Sci-Fi. This is easily one that you have to listen to rather than read – Emmes is magical in her performance – Thank you!!
