Good story, brought down by narration

I liked the story a lot. It’s what kept me going. Interesting characters as well. But there were two problems: (1) long sections of conversation in which there are lots of “he said”, “she said” - repeated back and forth. Set my teeth on edge; (2) narrator did a lot of taking his voice up at the end of sentences, and stretches of being oh-so-intensely earnest to the point of melodramatic — so much so that the narration in those sections distracted annoyingly from the story line. Ugh.
Will avoid this narrator in future, but would listen to this author’s work again.

Great twists!

Again, Ed James wrote a great story about a young DC on the way up despite questionable leadership and having to chase false leads to keep them happy. But, he sticks to his instincts and proves a good investigator.
