About this listen

One morning in April 1924, the Honorable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher finds herself in a most unenviable position. Despite her best attempts to elude the inevitable, she must face her darkest fears and with all the strength and courage she can muster, must confront the one person she has tried hardest to avoid - the dentist. But upon arriving for her appointment, she finds the waiting room deserted and adjoining examination room locked, with no hint of either Dr. Talmadge or his nurse. Thinking to leave quietly, Daisy's retreat is halted by the return of the nurse and, with the help of Mrs. Talmadge, the two begin searching for the inexplicably absent doctor. Exhausting all other possibilities, they resort to looking once again in the surgery where they find him stilling in his dentist's chair with the nitrous mask strapped to his face, the tank of nitrous turned on full, a smile on his face and stone-cold dead.

While the circumstances of his death are out of the ordinary, there's no reason to suspect that it was anything other than a tragic, if inevitable, accident of a careless dope fiend. Certain that there is something more than happenstance and an accident involved in the dentist's untimely death, Daisy is determined to uncover the truth behind a case of what she is certain is murder most foul.

This held my interest until the very end. I really didn't see this ending at all.

I am constantly wishing that I could dial down the readers piercing voice. Otherwise her reading is fine. I'm thankful for these simple stories to keep my mind off the struggles that the world is going through at this time. Thanks Audible!

Readers voice shrill at times. Headache ensues!

Lucy rayne is an excellent narrator! I love her voices and accents! This story was better than some of the other “Daisy” books, even though I guessed “whodunnit” very early in the book.

Good story

The series continues to improve with the introduction of some new characters, friends of Daisy, and continued character development. Now that we have a good handle on the characters, the machinations between them are more complex letting each character shine and grow. On to the next book!

Very enjoyable

all over the place, slow at times, then summed up in a flash. not sure I can keep going with a narrator that makes the inspector sound stupid and a thug.

Slow and jump to conclusions

I love these period mysteries from Carola Dunn. Lucy Raynor is a wonderful narrator, and really good with her Indian accent and her men’s voices, if only she wouldn’t go SO high with Daisy’s voice and with some of her other ladies. It is rather piercing; but one wants to overlook it and continue listening to find out the culprit in the end.

Another great mystery.

Delightful and so interesting. I do agree with a lead character, there were to many suspects. I had to go over some parts twice but I enjoyed the book.
