Fifteen-year-old Cole McCabe hides his secret well. Six years of sexual abuse and now, a murder. Fear and shame have kept him quiet, but when Cole finds out one of his parents knew what was happening to him and did nothing to stop it, he devises a plan to humiliate and hurt them, just like he was for so long.
Will they confess their deepest, darkest sin to save the life of their only son, knowing it will destroy their own?

Lately, I’ve been wanting to get out of my element when it comes to reading/listening to my usual genres. So, I’ve been on the lookout for something different, and ding, ding! Here it was. This was such an emotional journey for me as the reader. I felt so attached to Cole and wanted to help him out of his crappy situation. It was horrible, but in a good way, learning what all he had been through, finding out that his mother knew the whole time, and then smiling at the end when she disappeared. I really had hoped that she would have died somehow. I guess disappearing was better than nothing. This was a sad, pull-you-in-and-hold-you-tightly-in-suspense, fast-paced story. I loved it.
I wasn’t sure about the narrator in the beginning, but overall, I think she did a great job. She helped add in this extra innocence to Cole that really pulled the heart strings when she spoke for his character.
Questions/Comments:
I didn't understand how Cole's mother could have been so stupid that even after seeing something she knew wasn't right (her father having sex with her brother), she still went ahead and believed that her brother was a homosexual and her father was only helping him. I guess you have to be in that situation...until then you won't know how you'll act?! Maybe?
Why didn't she try to kill her father? Like even as an old man, she could have pushed him down the stairs, but she doesn't do anything. Instead, she allows her father to continue raping Cole, knowing what he was doing. I think the worst part for me when Cole's mother tried to blame Cole. Wow!
When Jared's body is found, it's described as being some bones in clothing. How would he have been bones already given only a couple of months (at most) had passed?

I felt sorry for Cole and wanted to hug him. I also ended up hating his mother. I felt she buried her head in the sand. I would have liked her pov, just so I know what is going on in her brain when she found out about the abuse. Unfortunately, there are people like her, so it was not a big surprise that she did what she did. Of course there are people who are a lot worse but it still does not excuse her for turning a blind eye.
This book is an emotional roller coaster. If you are into this sort of thing then this is for you. I thought it was really well written.
Not for everyone.

I would say to make sure you read the blurb before purchasing this read. It deals with some dark subject matter.
That being said, I could not stop listening to it, devouring it in one sitting. Divulgence was a roller coaster of twists and turns amidst the cruelty the main character suffered. Very well plotted and paced. The narrator, Michelle Marie did a great job keeping me in the story. Now I am curious about the Christine Copper's other audiobooks.
