About this listen

Dave Pelzer was brutally abused as a child by his emotionally unstable, alcoholic mother. She considered him a slave - no longer a boy, but an "it".

He was physically and mentally tortured and starved. The outside world knew nothing of the nightmare he experienced behind closed doors, and his father was aware of the abuse but turned to denial and alcohol. The abuse only fueled a determination to survive and become stronger.

He eventually found amazing strength from his experiences: both in himself and other people.

Heartbreaking!

This was horribly sad! The narrator sounded as if he could have been David detached or hypnotized looking back from an emotional glitch instead of a personal involvement. I believe that can be reached, but I don't know, it was just "off" sometimes in the way of narration. Could be because I'm a little "overly" emotional about stuff. The story itself in the way of progression makes it so troubling, the protection of his mom, the feelings of betrayal at the same time. I do wish he had given some closure for his siblings, even though this was his story. The chain of abuse continues. I don't feel I wasted my time with this one, I feel that if people listen they will have more of an idea of how easily children are manipulated to protect the abusers. This must NOT happen, but denial is too easy. This definitely was worth my time.

Heartbreaking but needed

As a teacher, we are required to report suspected child abuse. It can be hard, not wanting to put stress on a family based on suspicion. But stories like this are a grave reminder of the consequences of not reporting, of second guessing yourself, of turning a blind eye. It’s so heartbreaking to view child abuse from the child’s perspective, but needed so that people can be more aware and speak up when they suspect a child is in danger. Thank you for your story.

powerful... needs whole trilogy for closure

only ready this first book leaves me with questions. I would only recommend people ready this trilogy at one collective book instead of sperate.

Be prepared to cry all the way until the end!

I learned about this book when I was enrolled in the Macon GA child welfare training academy2019! In class, we only listened to one chapter. I wept in class during the reading of chapter one. As a survivor of child abuse myself This book changed my life.

David Pelzer is a true surviver.

No child should ever suffer anything like that, ever! And now he's a better person despite all that he's been through.

Tragic

It is hard to believe a child can be subjected to such violence. How can a parent that started off being so kind pick only one of her children to torture. No wonder we have so many disturbed children in this world. We need to work on the help these children get. Sometimes it’s not any better than where they came drone.

This information had to be told. It was sad and disturbing, but had to be told. It was well done. I’m glad this poor child had such a strong will and things finally turned out better for him. I hope his parents payed for the horrible things that were done to their child.

Not for the faint of heart.

There are definitely many moments that are hard to swallow; but for those who choose to know and feel what this boy went through, this story is captivating. With credit to the narrator, The story is delivered with a strong balance of boyish perspective and the harsh reality of what he went through.

I felt a few questions were left unanswered, but then again that can be seen as part of the story. Also appreciated was the epilogue, associated perspectives, and resources.
