About this listen

A dark, psychological suspense drama with a twist you won't see coming....

Alone.

As one woman battles to survive the chilling darkness, with long hours of nothing to do but wait in terror for her captor to return, she grapples through obscure dreams and memories of a painful family past.

After a tumultuous childhood in a broken home, keeping secrets became a way of life for twin sisters Gabby and Olivia and their little sister, Emma. They've all got skeletons in their closets; memories locked away never to see the light of day.

But after they take divergent paths in life, disaster strikes, and their pasts collide head-on with a mysterious present in this surreal and gripping family drama. The worst has happened, and if they want to find the key to survival and reconciliation, they must learn to let their skeletons out, shake the dust off them, and maybe even let them dance across the floor.

At turns heartbreaking, dark, and beautiful, The Girl in the Box explores not only the consequences of secrets - even secrets kept out of fear - but also the courage it takes to speak the truth, to let go, and to survive.

Trigger warning: The content of this novel contains graphic scenes: violence to women, victimization, abduction, and abuse.

Previously titled: Let Me Go. Fiction: psychological suspense, family drama, stand-alone (no cliff-hangers).

Wow!

Just wow! That is all I can say. This book starts a series that is gut wrenching and beautiful. After you finish this series (three books I think) make sure you check out the SHTF series by the same author. It definitely takes a wild turn. There are four books out but I hear there will be a fifth one in that series.

Touched my soul

I have to admit that I started this book about 6 months ago. It gave me such a horrible case of claustrophobia that I couldn’t stand the thought of it. Just imagining it gave me a terrible sense of foreboding and dread. But I couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every time I would finish a book I was listening to I would scroll down to The Girl in the Box and contemplate picking up where I left off. Finally I bit the bullet and started it from the beginning. These characters are so well thought out it seems like I know each of them personally. Ms. Akers can make me scream in outrage, cry at injustice, sob with joy when things go well, dread when things go well because you know another shoe is going to drop and it will be 10times worse, and yet still laugh as well. Quite a rollercoaster of emotion. Well worth the read!

Gotcha

Lisa does a great job of grabbing your attention right from the beginning and keeps you guessing right till the end. A dark and tragic story of a mother and her three daughters and the trials they have to face to find their way back to each other.

Awesome if you can handle the torture

I enjoyed this book as long as I kept telling myself it was just a story and not real. Not saying that these sadistic people don’t exist but that’s just how I got through it. Definitely kept my attention all the way through.

great book

parts are kind of hard to listen to. if you have read shoot like a girl and fight like a man this is a great insight to the sisters. but a great stand alone book.

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED....

This book was not at all what I expected. I was expecting more suspense about the girl in the box not a story about her entire child hood. it had nothing to do with why she was in the box. I listened for 5hrs about her sad life until I couldn't listen anymore. again it was a good story but not what I was hoping for.

The story is interesting

I'm struggling to finish only because of the way the narrator reads. Theres an inflection on the end of every sentence and it's driving me crazy. otherwise I'm enjoying the story. May have to read it on kindle instead.
