About this listen

When a body is presumed to be her missing husband’s, a woman must unravel the secrets of her own past to clear her name, find the truth, and put her conscience to rest once and for all.

All Ruby wanted was a fresh start. But after an early retirement and a relocation to a tight-knit community with her husband, Tom, and her daughter, Lily, her new beginning takes a turn.

First her troubled daughter and then her husband disappear without a trace. Unsure how to cope, grief-ridden Ruby turns to her neighborhood friends to find a way forward with new hobbies, including a murder club where they try to solve cold cases.

But just as unexpectedly as her family vanished, a body floats to the surface of the nearby lake.

And everyone is sure the body belongs to Tom…everyone except Ruby.

Determined to find out what happened to her family once and for all, Ruby digs into her neighbors’ lives, and her own, only to uncover secrets that raise more questions than they answer. And the biggest question of all—why doesn’t she recognize the body?

Critic reviews

“Rea Frey delights suspense lovers with her latest killer story featuring characters who seem to morph from sympathetic to suspicious without warning. You will quickly learn that no one is who they seem to be in this unputdownable thriller.”Bookreporter

“In her latest thriller, Frey writes with authority, weaving together themes of family secrets, domestic violence, and childhood trauma. The characters are complex and believable and the plot expertly crafted. A highly compelling page-turner!”—Wendy Walker, bestselling author of What Remains

“You had me at neighborhood murder club! In a fast-paced, exciting read where every neighbor is a murder suspect, Rea Frey has once again woven together an enticing tale of suspense. One bit of advice: don’t trust anyone.”—Georgina Cross, author of One Night, Nanny Needed, and Amazon bestseller The Stepdaughter

A hidden past, an abusive relationship, a missing daughter and a husband who she’s glad to be rid of make for an intriguing story. But who is the murderer?

The story moves from the past to the present but keeps you completely enthralled. The twists and turns are great and you don’t see the killer until they are revealed.

You will never guess who did it until it’s right there

Whoa! I did NOT see that ending coming! I just knew that I knew who the killer was until I didn't. The storyline flips back and forth from Then and Now, all from Ruby's perspective. You'll start to get a sense of what happened in the past as you work to figure out what's going on in the present, but you may not be prepared for the grand reveal.

An unanticipated twist... the best kind!

Holy crap, this was an amazing book!!! And that ending…OMG. Read it, listen to it. You won’t regret it.

Like others who have commented, I tried to give us a chance, but after umpteen hours, and still three left, I just had to quit.

Pretty predictable, too much repitition - we get it - the protagonist has a past…

Narrator pretty good!

Omg…get on with it already!

I’m trying to hang with this. I’m interested in the story, and I liked the narrator at the start, but I’m halfway in and there are still 5 hours to go. I looked at reviews for people who read the book themselves and so many mentioned how it was such a fast, quick read and they breezed through it — but this woman is reading so slow it’s over 10 hours of audio. She also has a tendency of whispering at the end of sentences and it’s becoming more and more noticeable. We’ll see if I finish it.

Soooo slow.

The only reason I kept listening to this book was because of the narrator! I swear to God, majority of the time I kept thinking it was more than one person!!! I don’t know how Rachael L Jacobs did it, I really don’t, but she was the only reason I kept listening to the book!!

Now if I was going to explain why I was emotionally wrecked by the book it would be a bit of a spoiler. So all I’ll say is that there’s some unnecessary deaths, and an ending that really should be lead to sequel!!!

I was emotionally wrecked by this book, but it had a shocking ending I guess

The book was good until the Community Forum. That was such an unnecessary addition and made the story immature. The title didn’t really seem to match the plot. I was unimpressed. I will say that the narrator was excellent. Honestly glad I finished it.

I Will Forget This Book
