About this listen

An upstanding political candidate. A determined stalker. A shattering lost weekend. Amid the clashes and intrigue of the campaign trail, to what lengths will the elegant, all-too-devoted wife of a seemingly incorruptible politician go in the name of love, loyalty, and ego?

From breakout Tiktok star Shanora Williams, a propulsive, sexy, rich-people-behaving-badly thriller for fans of Kellye Garrett, Sally Hepworth, Liv Constantine, Eliza Jane Brazier, and Tarryn Fisher.

For Jolene “Jo” Baker, the least she can do for her adoring husband, Dominic, is give unwavering support for his North Carolina gubernatorial run. He is not only the love of her life, he's also helping her prove that she's far more than just a pampered trophy wife. With huge crowds showing up at Dominic’s speeches and the polls consistently in his favor, she's never been happier to stand proudly by his side...

Until she and Dominic start seeing the same, strangely ominous woman turning up all along the campaign trail. Until their tour starts becoming a nightmare of botched events, crucial missed information, and increasingly dangerous “accidents.” Suddenly Jo can't get any answers from Dominic—or understand why he is acting so paranoid and terrified....

What Jo can do is start digging into his past—one she's never really questioned beyond his perfect image and dazzling accomplishments. What results is an alarming series of events that leave her baffled: Good friends turn into enemies, truths are revealed to be lies, and all clues lead back to one secret, shattering weekend that changes Jo’s entire life. With her world splintering into pieces, can Jo risk trying to set things right? Or will hiding the bitter truth by any means necessary destroy her as well?

This was my 4th book by this author. overall, I think she does good with suspense. I like how she gets straight to the point. She don't waste your time with fluff.
Now the bad; narrator. specifically, the female. She paused in weird places and didn't annunciate to capture the emotions of the women characters.

kept my interest

The overall story was entertaining but the female narrator was awful. The cadence did not make sense and was honestly hard to get thru.

Odd, disjointed narration

I read my first Shanora Williams book last year and I was hooked. She has a great (although twisted :) at times) mind. This political thriller was filled with twists and turns. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time and just when I thought I knew what was going on…bam another twist. Definitely can’t wait for her upcoming releases.

Full of twists & turns

Love the thrillers by Shenora. The 3 in the plus catalog have made me purchase the other. The female narrator has a very weird cadence to her reading. often distracting. But the story is worth tolerating it. I hope the thrillers keep coming!!

Love her thrillers!

Love a Good Thriller!

Unfortunately the narrators were not very good. Too much pausing between words or phrases. It didn't flow.

Shanora Williams crafts a fast-paced political thriller that grips you from page one. Governor-to-be Dominic Baker is the charismatic, ambitious husband, but cracks in his perfect image begin to form as strange “accidents,” ominous stalking, and resurfacing secrets threaten his campaign. His wife, Jolene (Jo) Baker, steadfastly supportive yet intuitively sharp, becomes determined to unearth the dangerous truth, no matter the cost.

Jolene “Jo” Baker is the emotional core: loyal, resourceful, and multi-dimensional. She supports her husband’s political ascent even as she uncovers chilling layers of betrayal and violence. Dominic is enigmatic and layered—a powerful politician hiding a dark past that begins to unravel in unexpected ways. Brynn—Dominic’s high‑school sweetheart turned unexpected adversary—brings menace and complexity. Her reappearance catalyzes the unraveling of Dominic’s hidden life.
I know you're thinking a love triangle but it's more like a pentagon.

The Bitter Truth has a Friendship & Empowerment theme which celebrates Brynn & Shayvon. Although Shayvon isn’t a central figure in the novel, let’s imagine her alongside Brynn to highlight an empowering theme: the unwavering strength of sisterhood. If Brynn and Shayvon stood united in this story, their bond could have offered a powerful counterbalance to the political manipulation surrounding Jo. Imagine them strategizing together—Brynn’s insider understanding of Dominic’s past paired with Shayvon’s fresh perspective. Their combined courage, loyalty, and mutual support would reinforce the novel’s message: women’s alliance can uncover truths and muster resilience in the face of deception. Everyone needs a friend like SHAYVON!!!!

I was completely satisfied by the thrills and suspense. While the narration for the women characters was a little stilted, I enjoyed the voices and tone overall. That's my only criticism, I was engulfed by the story and will be reading more by this author.

What a thiller!
