About this listen

You can cover up the truth, but it won’t stay buried forever.

A man is found bludgeoned to death in woodland by the village of Canwick, and the close-knit community is sent into shock. Detective Karen Hart, still haunted by the tragic loss of her husband and daughter nearby, is brought in to investigate the horrific murder.

It soon becomes clear that dark secrets lie behind Canwick’s unspoiled appearance. When Hart begins to suspect that a modern-day slavery ring has been hiding in plain sight among the villagers, she faces a race to find proof before the culprits slip from her grasp. But when key witnesses start disappearing, it’s obvious that there’s a deep-rooted conspiracy to keep prying eyes away from the truth.

But in a village where everyone knows everyone, who knows more than they are letting on - and who can Hart really trust? She’s in deep and she’s never been more alone. She must confront the tragedy of her own past if she wants to catch the killers before it’s too late. Because one thing’s for certain - there’s no turning back...

Great Read

Don't Turn Back was a great read by D.S. Butler. In the woodland's of Canwick, a man was found bludgeoned to death. The community is a very small one that now is sent to shock. Detective Karen Hart is brought in to investigate the murder while she is still haunted by the loss of her husband and daughter. Karen starts to believe that there may be a modern-day slavery ring in the small village. Unfortunately for her witnesses start to disappear to try and keep her from the truth. This was a good read about Detective Hart finding the killers.

Good but a little slow

I enjoy this series but this is not my favorite. It was quite slow to get started for me and, frankly, I had a hard time keeping track of the characters. I find that happens more often when I listen to an audiobook. But despite all that, the story was interesting but a little slow. Narration was very good.

Human trafficking in a quiet village?

DS Hart is investigating the death of a man found beaten when she is put on a different case...possible modern day slavery. One of the suspects makes an offhand comment that leads Karen to believe that the accident that killed her husband and daughter was not an accident! The more that Karen investigates, the more it looks as if there was a cover up and possible police corruption. Great story with lots of angst generated by a DI from Morgan’s former assignment. Looking forward to the next book.

Twists and Turns

This was a bizarre collection of events that twisted and turned and eventually unraveled. Is there anything more corruptible than greedy humans?

Engaging

This was a great police procedural with memorable characters. I read the first two books in this series, then listened to this third book. Narration was excellent, the story was strong and atmospheric.

couldn't get through

I normally like this narrator, but not this time. I couldn't tell which character was speaking most of the time. Some of the voices were exactly the same. Had to give up halfway through because of that.

Decent Story but Narrator Needs Work

I enjoyed the plot overall,l. Some plot points were a bit too obvious. Narrator was good at times, but I found it hard to distinguish the female protagonist voice from the lead male characters. Why did she make the female protagonist voice so deep? It was very unnatural sounding.

An okey listen

It was okey. The narrator seemed to have some difficulties switching between some of the man voices and "Hart's" voice.
