About this listen

A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.

DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.

But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.

As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

Intense!

This is my first book by this author and I know there will e more in my future. It is a dark and twisted tale, so if you have triggers you need to be wary. I loved it.

Pushed through the horrible narrator

In spite of the pain from the shrill, nasal and often frantic narration, I held the course because the story began to interest me. Glad I did, but really will never be able to listen to this narrator again. It hurt my head too much. The story though kept me, with sufficient twists and surprises, and some interesting characters. But I solved it too soon. At least, I solved the "who" too soon, if not the "why."

Slow Paced

A slow paced story. I enjoyed it until the heroine started talking to the ghost of her dead husband. She blamed the prescription meds… yet no one was concerned that she was hallucinating? The heroine flipped so quickly from struggling with PTSD and grief to the tough ass cop. A bit disappointing… let’s see what book two is like before I give up on this author altogether. Part of the Kindle Unlimited catalog.

Hard to tell

Unfortunately I don't feel ready to review. I thought it was a little confusing. Things didn't come together, as far as I could tell. I will, however, go ahead and read the next in this series. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised!

Good Story, Shame About the Narration.

A good story , well written though a bit predictable. Based in an area I used to live in and I enjoyed the places in the book bringing back memories. However the narration grated terribly and lacked any depth of feeling. I agree that there were a number of different voices used but the main character's voice was consistently inflexible and staccato. even when soothing witnesses and or suspects. Nowhere was there even a hint of a regional accent.
I would like to read book 2 but this will be a purchase that II will read myself rather than purchase through Audible.

Not a fan of the narrator.

Decent story and I liked the main character but the narrator sounded histrionic and her voice was piercing at times. I’m not sure if I will listen to the next in the series if it is the same narrator.

but we'll worth the listen. More conspiracy (sigh). I'm looking forward to the next book.

Great book!

Great story with great characters! I almost wanted the killer to get away with murder. I know it’s wrong, but I felt the victims deserved it. When a book makes me almost root for the killer, you know it’s good. I can’t wait for the next DI Kate Young book!

Looking Forward to more Kate Young.

Fortunately I purchased both the ebook and audiobook of this title. The story is compelling with many twists and turns. There are also a few surprises that will keep you guessing to the end. Carol Wyer wrote a great story and I'm anticipating more great mysteries in this Kate Young series. My only problem was with the audiobook. The narration was not good. The narrator read this story in clipped, choppy sentences and in a pitch that was grating. I don't know what went wrong, but this made it extremely difficult to listen to. I finally finished the story with the ebook only.
