Publisher's summary
Tricia and Antoinette Clarke - best friends, Power Twins, and Boss Ladies - show you how to take your work and life to the Next Level.
"Aspiring Boss Ladies in any field should pay attention." (Gabrielle Union-Wade, actress, activist, and New York Times best-selling author of We’re Going to Need More Wine)
As African-American women who have climbed their way to the highest ranks of the media world, Tricia and Antoinette have learned that to win when the deck is stacked against you, you need to ditch the old Status Quo rules. Whether you’re starting your career, wondering why you’re not further along, or looking to pivot, you’ve got to double down on yourself, and you’ve got to cultivate a tribe of people who will double down on you, too.
Now, they share their wisdom with the next generation of Boss Ladies looking to up their game. If you’re tired of getting second-class rewards for first-class work and you’re ready to be respected for who you are, Double Down will give you the tools and tactics to go all in on your dreams. Among the lessons you’ll learn:
- Don’t emulate, originate: Identify your unique superpowers to start from a place of strength.
- Don’t stay in place, move into white space: To stand out, use your superpowers to do something no one else does.
- Don’t just compete, play the long game: Work backward from where you want to end up - aim high, go far.
- Don’t inherit your tribe, build it: Actively cultivate a crew of people who will push you to go after your most audacious goals (and set new ones).
Packed with strategies and solutions, as well as stories of other badass Boss Ladies including Ayesha Curry, Carly Cushnie, Anne Wojcicki, and many others, this remixed rule book will help you see the power in yourself - and double down on it.

In his early 20s, Curtis Jackson, known as 50 Cent, rose to the heights of fame and power in the cutthroat music business. A decade ago, the multi-platinum selling rap artist decided to pivot. His ability to adapt to change was demonstrated when he became the executive producer and star of Power, a high-octane, gripping crime drama centered around a drug kingpin's family. The series quickly became "appointment" television, leading to Jackson inking a four-year, $150 million contract with the Starz network - the most lucrative deal in premium cable history.

Nothing Is Missing is a riveting, unputdownable story of what it takes to show up for yourself—and the joy that can come once you do. Raised in a home where food was unstable and anger was the norm, Nicole learned early that she needed to take charge of her own safety and security. So she did: She got into an elite private school by talking to a stranger in her dad’s cab, she strategized her way onto Wheel of Fortune to pay for college, she adopted three girls after meeting their mother panhandling, she quit her job to launch her own business, and she struggled.

Story
Success is not born out of skill, school, where we’re from, who we know, or what we scored on the SAT. None of us were born ready. None of us started life knowing how to fly a plane or launch a company or knit a sweater for our dog. But we are born with something more important than skills. We’re born with optimism—the initial seed for success. Optimism fuels the belief that you can be the one to create the good the world needs. But you’ve got to hone it. And practice it. And determine to live from it.

In 2015, Arlan Hamilton was on food stamps and sleeping on the floor of the San Francisco airport, with nothing but an old laptop and a dream of breaking into the venture capital business. She couldn’t understand why people starting companies all looked the same (white and male), and she wanted the chance to invest in the ideas and people who didn’t conform to this image of how a founder is supposed to look. Hamilton had no contacts or network in Silicon Valley, no background in finance - not even a college degree. What she did have was fierce determination and the will to succeed.

Critic reviews
"I admire Antoinette and Tricia’s bond, work ethic, and drive. Their book is proof that 'doubling down' on our authentic selves will spark success and joy - not only in our careers, but also in our friendships, families, and communities." (Ayesha Curry, entrepreneur, TV personality, and best-selling author of The Seasoned Life)
"The support of black women, owning their power and setting the standard and example for the next generation, is so important and necessary. What Antoinette and Tricia are sharing through their empowering book is exactly what we need at this very moment and time. To reinforce and motivate the next generation to follow suit." (Misty Copeland, American Ballet Theatre principal dancer and New York Times best-selling author of Ballerina Body and Life in Motion)
"If there’s one thing I respect the most about any entrepreneur, it’s their hustle - their work ethic. Antoinette and Tricia are proven hustlers, with the success to show for it. With Double Down, they’ve generously let us in on their secrets." (Daymond John, New York Times best-selling author of The Power of Broke and Rise and Grind)
"Antoinette and Tricia are First in Class Badass Boss Ladies. The personal and professional stories they share in Double Down speak volumes to all of us. The lessons learned will be my go-to as I continue to mentor the next generation of leaders. This book is the platinum standard, and most important, the advice is drawn from real life experiences.... Truly inspiring." (Jo Ann Ross, president and chief advertising revenue officer at CBS Corporation)

Story
Until recently Tess Vigeland was a longtime host of public radio's Marketplace. It was a rewarding, high-status job, and Tess was very good at it - but she'd begun to feel restless. Without any definite, clear sense of what she wanted to do next (but an absolute certainty that what she'd been doing was no longer truly satisfying), she walked away from her dream job and into a vast unknown. Suddenly she was no longer " Marketplace's Tess Vigeland"; she was just Tess Vigeland.

Story
What does it mean to be an adult? In the 20th century, psychologists came up with five markers of adulthood: finish your education, get a job, leave home, marry, and have children. Since then, every generation has been held to those same markers. Yet so much has changed about the world and living in it since that sequence was formulated. All of those markers are choices, and they’re all valid, but any one person’s choices along those lines do not make them more or less an adult.

“When boss ladies join forces and combine their powers, they can do just about anything”
This is a book everyone needs to read!
Tricia and Antoinette are a true inspiration to woman.
The book came out at the perfect time in my life when I needed inspiration in my career.
Their dedication, their hard work and work-ethic led to their amazing success.
Now, they are inspiring and empowering others to do the same and stand out.
Inspiring us to shine.
Teaching us to connect, to be compassionate with one another and to join forces to inspire each other, up our game and never give up.
Thank you for the advices and the empowerment those pages have given me. “Embrace your fear!”

Love it!
I love this book! it is very timely for my life. This book is not just about their personal stories of success but it shows you how they overcame obstacles and they are showing how you can do the same. For me, there is no better way to reach people than to show that you've walked in someone else's shoes.

Good Story Wanted More
The Clarke sisters did a very good job telling their story. But I was looking for more more of a how to guide what steps to follow. If that’s what you’re looking for this is not it. Their experiences help you to look at what you were doing and what you have done, and how you may want to change things for the better. Some of the terminology they use like North Star and SuperPowers point other books that they possibly have read. Personally I have picked up the Northstar book and now I am reading it. I plan to get the other book too. This is a good book to get you started on where you need to start looking to create a better journey for yourself
