Publisher's summary

In one of London's most elegant shops, a decorative doll in green velvet adopts some rather human, and sinister, traits....

A country gentleman is questioned about a murder that has yet to be committed....

While summoning spirits, a medium is drawn closer to the world of the dead than she ever imagined possible....

In a small country church, a dying man's last word, sanctuary, becomes both an elegy and a clue to a crime.

Mix of Poirot, Miss Marple and stand-alone stories

Read by a variety of narrators, this short story collection has mostly short story mysteries and one of Christie's supernatural short stories. Overall, the short story mysteries were good and except for narrator Joan Hickson, were read well. Hickson's voice is hard to hear and has a lisp. I did not like the last story, The Last Seance which had a supernatural element to it.

Mixed - Half Excellent, Half Mediocre

Narration quality is all excellent, but some of the stories themselves are just dumb. The one about the doll and the one about the medium are boring, but the rest are very good.

There are other, better, and longer collections with the same excellent narrators, but this will do once those are finished.

Joan Hickson is the...

... quintessential Miss Marple. I loved her in the Marple mysteries television series that I watched years ago and she has always been my favorite Marple. Other readers are fine and professional in their approach, but to me, Hickson is the stand out in this collection.

Worth the listen, and the listen again.

Each story is vibrant and intriguing; sometimes you find yourself chuckling right along. The readers are marvelous! A++

Stories I've never heard before!

Unlike most of the reviews, I thought the dressmaker's doll was pretty good. No usual characters, and a twist ending. It had an "Arsenic and Old Lace" type feel. I never knew she did stand alone stories, so this was pretty fun. Loved all of these narrations. I was happy with this purchase.

Excellent!

I don't often give gleaming reviews, but I love Agatha Christie and the narrators were spectacular. This is a book I listen to again and again. Well worth the credit/money.

Fantastic classic stories with a nice balance

Great group of stories read by an excellent variety of talented actors who deliver an afternoon of fabulous dramatic storytelling. Enjoyed several times over.
