About this listen

The recently married Alix Martin is obsessed with a recurring dream of her new husband's murder. Each time she can see the murderer clearly, and it's the mild-mannered man she had previously been engaged to, taking his revenge. But, what's worse is that at the end of the dream she thanks the murderer. Perplexed, Alix tries to calm herself by spending time in the garden of her picturesque cottage. But her gardener confuses her further by wishing her well on her trip to London - a trip which Alix knows nothing about. Now Alix is scared: Is the gardener imagining things, or is she?

Short, Yet Entertaining!

I've always enjoyed Agatha Christy mysteries and "Philomel Cottage" was no exception. It was well written, with her famous twist at the end. It was a little less than an hour, well spent.

Hugh Fraser did a good job as narrator..

A very different type of short story by my favorite author, Agatha Christie. 😊

Love it!

This is a great short story, and includes my favourite Agatha Christie performer Hugh Fraser. A real surprise, and really enjoyable.

Tell Me

Despite having written hundreds, people tend not to think of Agatha Christie as a short story writer. Too bad because she is cracking at it. This is one of her best. Give it a go.

My favorite of this sale’s four selections

Of the four Agatha Christie nuggets offered in Audible’s Summer Shorts Sale, this was my favorite.
Short, suspenseful and smartly written.

Tense, suspenseful and fast-moving

All the enjoyable aspects of an Agatha Christie story, told in a short story form without
sacrificing any of the tension - I think you'll like it! Hugh Fraser is an outstanding narrator. The stories would not be the same without his genius.

Classic Unreliable Narrator

A wife becomes paranoid about her husband’s past. Should she fear him or should he fear her?

Good Christie short story

If you could sum up Philomel Cottage in three words, what would they be?

Compelling, psychological mystery.

What did you like best about this story?

Suspense was maintained throughout story.

What about Hugh Fraser’s performance did you like?

Everything.

If you could rename Philomel Cottage, what would you call it?

What dreams are made of.

Any additional comments?

Reading her short stories is a nice change of pace.

This is not a mystery

Hell no. This is a thriller/horror/suspense (and I avoid these genres as much as possible). It has 0 mystery in it. Plus no Agatha Christie short story has worked for me so far.

The only thing I enjoyed is Hugh Fraser's narration.
