About this listen

Sean O’Brien knows that his close friend, Dave Collins, isn’t a man who asks for favors. After three decades as a CIA officer, Collins learned self-reliance from the best school in the world - the streets. However, after five years out of the agency, he stops looking over his shoulder.

And then the assassinations begin.

One by one. Five of the CIA’s best former officers. Dave Collins’ old colleagues. Local police can’t protect retired CIA officers from ghosts of their past.

Dave’s life is on the line, and they are coming for him. Ghosts don’t leave tracks. They leave bodies. But to get close enough to kill Collins, they’ll have to get through one man who also learned survival from the streets and combat - Sean O’Brien. Dave Collins has been there for O’Brien.

And now it’s time to return the favor.

The story is good and most of the time the narration is as well. In the last book I remember there was a place name mispronounced and the same happens here. However, I would trade an occasional mispronounced name if in the last two books there was not a new narrator. I am very familiar with Tarpon Springs since it is about 30 minutes from where I live. The mispronounced Tarpon was driving me a little nutty. Twists and turns and an interesting story.

A fast paced, engaging book. I love the characters in this series and how the author continues to make them evolve, helping the reader get to know them better.

I have listened to all of this set except the last. I will start that today. Then I will have to wait for MERMAID to come out in audible.
Hope there will be many more. Love Tom Lowe and Axtell.

Another Great Read

See Shellys review for good in-depth details. This was on the two for one member sale. Great use of a credit to listen to a good narrator. Sins of the father are the focal point of this adventure mystery. Love every scene little Maxine is in. I thought this was a little longer than I personally like. The moral of the story, never give up.

Revenge Best Served Cold

I have been a big fan of Tom Lowe and Sean O'Brian from the beginning of the series. This is my first audio version and found it quite satisfying. The story revolves around a threat to the life of Dave, one of Sean's good friends who lives at the marina shared by Sean. An ex CIA operative, Dave's past catches up with him as a seemingly middle eastern terrorists is out to assassinate Dave and his former associates. As Sean gets involved, a well paced story moves along at an enjoyable pace.

My one minor complaint about the listen was Mr. Axtell's incorrect pronunciation of Tarpon Springs, a city I once inhabited. He insisted on calling it "Tar Pawn Springs" instead of the the correct "Tar PIN Springs" throughout the listen. I cringed every time I heard it said. If Mr. Axtell continues with the audio versions of Tom Lowe's work, I would advise him to investigate correct pronunciations of the area. Many are quite different than what they appear phonetically.

Terrorist PayBack

If you haven't listened to the Sean O'Brien you should!! I would suggest you listen to book one first for background, but each book in the series is a stand alone. Most deal with historical events, bot fiction and nonfictional.
This book deals with fictional events that occurred years earlier to a friend of Sean's. A terrorist his friend crossed paths with is now after him and other CIA operatives (and his daughter and son-in-law with their newly acquired sailboat the DRAGONFLY). Sean and a group of his friends (and 10 lb. miniature dachshund, Max) step up to help hunt down the terrorist turned serial killer and anyone who may be helping him. It's a battle to stay alive in this fast paced suspense thriller.
Michael David Axtell does an outstanding job narrating.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Fast paced cat and mouse with a serial killer...

I had just finished listening to a David Baldacci story, and that's a tough act to follow. I think the makings of a really great author are here, but too much of Lowe's dialogue sounds like scene-setting narration being spoken out loud. Some of the dialogue feels a little bit like it came from a Hallmark movie...... pleasant enough, but kind of predictable and a bit unsophisticated. His Sean O'Brien protagonist is really likeable, and the book was good enough that it kept me looking forward to climbing into my car for the next installment. I think with the right editor, Lowe could easily move from good to great. I'll probably try a few more of his books to see if he evolves. In the meantime, if you like ridiculously competent protagonists who overcome all the odds and continually tip the scales of good vs. evil book after book, then I highly recommend you investigate authors like Lee Child, Vince Flynn, Robert Crais and Bernard Cornwell.

A good (not great) story with a likable hero

All of the books in this series are great! If I pick up one of Tom Lowe’s book, I don’t have to second guess, I just get it. Sean O’Brian, Dave and Nick along with Sean’s dog, a dachshund named Maxine have great adventures!
