About this listen

A sharp-witted, debut high fantasy farce featuring killer moat squid, toxic masculinity, evil wizards, and a garlic festival-all at once.

It's bad enough waking up in a half-destroyed evil wizard's workshop with no eyebrows, no memories, and no idea how long you have before the Dread Lord Whomever shows up to murder you horribly and then turn your skull into a goblet or something.

It's a lot worse when you realize that Dread Lord Whomever is . . . you.

Gav isn't really sure how he ended up with a castle full of goblins, or why he has a princess locked in a cell. All he can do is play along with his own evil plan in hopes of getting his memories back before he gets himself killed.

But as he realizes that nothing-from the incredibly tasteless cloak adorned with flames to the aforementioned princess-is quite what it seems, Gav must face up to all the things the Dread Lord Gavrax has done. And he'll have to answer the hardest question of all-who does he want to be?

A high fantasy farce featuring killer moat squid, toxic masculinity, an evil wizard convocation, and a garlic festival. All at once. All in all, Dread Lord Gavrax has had better weeks.

I liked that the story goes against expectations in some ways while still being humorous, entertaining, and not giving in to the easy ways out.

A fun silly distraction

A perfect blend of whimsy, magic and character development. A great new fantasy voice. A must for anyone liking cosy fantasy.

Interesting characters

Never in my years have I actually cared about Goblins. I would fight to the death for these side characters. It’s an enjoyable story. I hated the voice the narrator gave the princess but it’s a just personal choice. Overall it was fun, smart, and deeply entertaining book. I got it done in a day and it was a pleasant experience.

It was a gentle adventure. Sometimes difficult to understand but came together well. I did enjoy the listening.

Entertaining story

Great story, well-plotted, crisp characters. I disliked the performer’s attempt at the princess’s voice, but extra-liked Gav’s voice so it evened out.

Evil discontent

Perfect narration of a great, heartwarming story! I bought this from one of the audible deals of the day and am so glad I did. This will be a re-listen for sure. Enjoyed the villain and all his goblins and the friends we make along the way!

Loved this hidden gem!

Fun, quirky, well written, with great narration! What else could anyone want?
The author succeeded from page one in developing a like of the main character as he struggled to find himself, literally.
She kept it going with witty writing, great secondary characters and humor. Not silliness but we'll thought out, life kicks you in the ass sometimes, type humor.
The narrator was awesome! Kept the characters real and the story flowing.
L.G. Estrella, watch your back! There's a new kid in town and her name is Caitlan!

Excellent Story & Excellent Narration!

I really liked the premise but the main character didn’t ring true. He felt like a woman pretending to be a man. Most of the supporting characters were hollow, to me. However, the writing is solid, well crafted and the storyline was paced nicely. The narrator did an excellent job.

Entertaining

From start to finish this was a uniquely crafted tale that was fun and clever. I hope to read and listen to more by this wonderful new author.

I really enjoyed this! This is kind of what I wanted how to become the dark lord and die trying to be. A humorous fantasy. The premise was intriguing and this is a use of the amnesia trope that is actually good. A man wakes up in a dark lords castle and he has no memory of who he is or why there is a princess in the dungeon, only to find out that he is the dark lord but has no idea why or what happened. He tries to fake it till he makes it, but things get complicated when he realizes he’s a part of a plot with multiple dark wizards.

This was so fun! It was funny, light hearted at times, dark at times, there was magic, mayhem, a garlic festival, and character development. Gav has a crisis of finding out who he is again after losing his memories and has to decide what to do and who he wants to be now. The goblin henchmen were surprisingly wholesome and I cared about them. I loved how they became a part of the story. I think the writing and perspective was interesting and thought provoking.

I will read her next book!
