About this listen

Often compared to both Ruth Rendell and P.D. James, Deborah Crombie is internationally acclaimed for her deftly written mysteries that combine suspense, with lyrical prose. Sharply etched characters further enrich this story of tangled relationships and dark secrets. Twelve years after their divorce, Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid receives a phone call from his ex-wife Victoria asking for his help. While working on a biography of the late poet Lydia Brooke, she has uncovered information that has her convinced Lydia's suicide five years ago was really murder. As Duncan begins his investigation, another murder occurs closer to home. Now he finds himself frantically searching for clues in Lydia's complicated past to find the killer before he strikes again. Award-winning author Deborah Crombie has crafted a beautifully written, multilayered mystery that leaves you gasping with surprise. Jenny Sterlin's narration deftly creates an air of suspense while capturing every nuance of the language.©1997 Deborah Crombie (P)2000 Recorded Books, LLC Detective Fiction Mystery Police Procedural Suspense Thriller & Suspense Traditional Detectives Women's Fiction

The story barely held against an abrupt, unpleasant voice and flat emotions in Kincaid’s portrayal and several other characters.

Interesting story. Irritating Narration.

Hard to say if I have a favorite book in this series. Each time I finish one, I think that one is it! Jenny Sterlin does a capable job in all voices except Duncan's, but even his is passable. Crombie's writing reminds me of Ruth Rendell who is hard to beat as a mystery writer in my estimation.

Series keeps getting better

D. Crombie is a true master of her craft. I highly recommend this gem of a literary masterpiece. I'm excited to have discovered this wonderful author and her works for myself and would shout to the rooftops to tell others.

Powerful

MS. Crombie's prose is beautiful, as befits a storyline about poets. Her imagery describing people and places gives a wonderful sense of character and sights. This series can be read back to back to back without getting bored or irritated by repetitious unimaginative phrases.

Beautifully written

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoy the Deobrah Crombie series, and have enjoyed the Michael Deehy versions. I also love Jenny Sterlin - the Mary Russell series (Laurie R. King) is about my favorite listening experience. I just didn't enjoy this combination.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narrative pace seemed a little slow. To my mind, the male voices didn't match the story.

Wasn't my favorite Sterlin narration

I love this series, especially when narrated by Michael Dehey. This narrator left something to be desired.

Great novel as always, less than stellar narrator

After several books in this series, Michael Deehy's voice had truly become Kincaid's. Ms Sterlin's voice seemed lack luster and sometimes actually bored. So disappointed.

Why must you change narrators mid-series?

I fell into this book and couldn't let go til the end. It's a great story with many surprising twists, wonderful characters you feel so much compassion for, and very real. My only complaint is that the narrator reads very slowly, which drove me a little crazy, but overall I loved it!

Absorbing!

What an amazing audiobook..
I have heard all of the previous books in the series,.. but changing narrator to
Gemma’s voice has added much more drama, and meaningful understanding of the complex characters to author introduces us to... Brava

Absolutely My Favorite So Far...!!!

My first recorded Deborah Crombie novel was one of the recent ones and I liked it well enough to start listening to earlier ones in the series. I almost skipped this title because a number of reviews had panned the narration. While I agree the men’s voices are a bit annoying, the book is definitely worth a listen and I will listen to more of the series.
