Novelista y poeta irlandés cuya agudeza psicológica e innovadoras técnicas literarias expresadas en su novela épica Ulises le convierten en uno de los escritores más importantes del siglo XX.
James Joyce nació en Dublín el 2 de febrero de 1882, en el seno de una familia modesta. En 1904 abandonó Dublín con Nora Barnacle, una camarera con la que acabaría casándose. Vivieron con sus dos hijos en Trieste, París y Zürich con los escasos recursos proporcionados por su trabajo como profesor particular de inglés y con los préstamos de algunos conocidos. En 1907 Joyce sufrió su primer ataque de iritis, grave enfermedad de los ojos que casi le llevó a la ceguera.
Su primera novela, Retrato del artista adolescente (1916), muy autobiográfica, recrea su juventud y vida familiar en la historia de su protagonista, Stephen Dedalus. Incapaz de conseguir un editor inglés para la novela, fue su mecenas, Harriet Shaw Weaver, directora de la revista Egoist, quien la publicó por su cuenta, imprimiéndola en Estados Unidos. En esta obra, Joyce utilizó ampliamente el monólogo interior, recurso literario que plasma todos los pensamientos, sentimientos y sensaciones de un personaje con un realismo psicológico escrupuloso. También de esta época data su obra de teatro Exiliados (1918).
Joyce alcanzó fama internacional en 1922 con la publicación de Ulises, una novela cuya idea principal se basa en la Odisea de Homero y que abarca un periodo de 24 horas en las vidas de Leopold Bloom, un judío irlandés, y de Stephen Dedalus, y cuyo clímax se produce al encontrarse ambos personajes. El tema principal de la novela gira en torno a la búsqueda simbólica de un hijo por parte de Bloom y a la conciencia emergente de Dedalus de dedicarse a la escritura. En Ulises, Joyce lleva aún más lejos la técnica del monólogo interior, como medio extraordinario para retratar a los personajes, combinándolo con el empleo del mimetismo oral y la parodia de los estilos literarios como método narrativo global. Posteriormente, escribiría otra obra monumental: Finnegans Wake (1939)

Story

Story
