About this listen

A New York Times and USA Today bestseller

From New York Times bestselling author of The Perfect Marriage and You Shouldn’t Have Come Here comes a chilling family thriller about the (sometimes literal) skeletons in the closet.

After their mother passes, three estranged siblings reunite to sort out her estate. Beth, the oldest, never left home. She stayed with her mom, caring for her until the very end. Nicole, the middle child, has been kept at arm’s length due to her ongoing battle with a serious drug addiction. Michael, the youngest, lives out of state and hasn’t been back to their small Wisconsin town since their father ran out on them seven years before.

While going through their parents’ belongings, the siblings stumble upon a collection of home videos and decide to revisit those happier memories. However, the nostalgia is cut short when one of the VHS tapes reveals a night back in 1999 that none of them have any recollection of. On screen, their father appears covered in blood. What follows is a dead body and a pact between their parents to get rid of it, before the video abruptly ends.

Beth, Nicole, and Michael must now decide whether to leave the past in the past or uncover the dark secret their mother took to her grave.

Perfect Audio.

This book was amazing. I absolutely enjoyed it. I read this book in less than 24 hours. The audio was so spot on, I was not confused at all. I enjoyed the chapters with a different voices and tones. Would definitely read again, and also listen again from the reader.

Was ok

I really hate myself for getting sucked in to the hype on books that are showcased for whatever reason. But this book was just ok for me. Definitely not a top favorite or 5 stars for me. The whole book seemed predictable and nothing seemed shocking and no emotional ride. I listened to the complete book and the narration was good. I wouldn’t listen again or waste a credit.

Amazing story with an even more amazing narration

I'd never heard of this author before but the cover had me intrigued so I figured I'd give it a listen. I'm so glad I took a chance on this book because it was amazing. The story telling was great and even in the slightly mundane sections, I never found myself getting bored. The twist at the end was nice and not overly predictable and the epilogue tied everything together nicely. I also really enjoyed the narration and the fact that multiple narrators were used for the different characters. Overall I would definitely recommend this book.

I had higher hopes

It’s a page-turner, in that I was pretty ready for it to be over. Repetitive use of phrases in books bothers me. There were quite a few times unnecessary suspense was built in as well. I would not recommend it.

Excellent Thriller!

Yes!!!! This is an excellent thriller! I loved the twists and layering of details. And there were so many great lines throughout. Excellent read! I grabbed this book to read at the same time as my sister, but I couldn’t put it down, so we didn’t get to chat about it as we went.

What a cast!

This is easily Jeneva’s best book since The Perfect Marriage (and I’m a big fan of all of her books). I was led down the wrong rabbit hole and was yelling at myself and my kindle while reading the ending. I love this family, love this book, love the narrators. Everything about this was perfection.

Rate this an A-

Loved the book, lots of twists & turns I did not see coming. My only complaint was the ending was kinda cheesy, but it was so good along the way, the cliches of tying everything together during the last 20ish minutes were just a blip. Interesting, original, & exciting read!

I could relate to each character.

I love how the story came together. You never truly know someone. Even family. Sometimes family is who you should fear.

The last person I expected

This listen was amazing. The way it was written makes you see everyone’s perspective. I was shocked and the twist and still can’t get it out of my mind. Will definitely recommend.

Love it!

Loved it!! So many twists and turns and made me feel at home hearing Elkhorn and others in the story. Living in Texas and missing Wisconsin soooo much
