Publisher's summary

The second book in the Next post-apocalyptic thriller series.

As the remnants of the human race mobilize for an attack on the mutants who have taken over the abandoned cities, a small band of survivors are caught in the middle of the conflict. Rachel Wheeler's own mutant abilities could make her a valuable resource for the new government and the army it has formed in the wake of the apocalypse. But the people who want to take back the world have a ruthless vision for the future, and a toxic planet is unleashing its rage in the form of deadly predators. Meanwhile, the mutants are evolving at an astonishing rate and establishing a social order that defies human control. When her group is drawn into the ultimate war, Rachel must decide whether to stay loyal to the ones she loves or fight for ideals she doesn't fully embrace. The top of the food chain is at stake, and the extinction of the human race may not be the worst possible outcome.

Awesome book and series!

Another excellent book in this great post-apocalyptic series. This is a continuation series. The first series is After and I highly recommend listening to that series first, otherwise you'll miss the back story of the characters and how this post-apocalyptic world came to be. I've said this about the previous series but Scott Nicholson writes a great and original story. Zapheads are not your typical "zombie". Solar storms have "zapped" the brains of some of humanity turning them into zombie-like creatures. Unlike zombies, the zapheads evolve and the younger infants are smart and dangerous! Both series are great and definitely worth checking out. Kevin Clay does a great job in both series! He's a great narrator with great talent! He's good with all the different male and female characters. I'd definitely recommend checking out some of his other work as well.

The saga continues...

Rachel and Devonte continue their journey through a mutated and very dangerous Earth. Rachel being half-Zap is not helping them much. She is not enough human to help and not enough Zap to communicate with them. Meanwhile the government, aka military wants to attack the Zaps before they get any stronger and are trying to come up with a plan. The military still knows next to nothing about the Zaps, so it’s pretty difficult to come up with something that will work based upon…nothing. Rachel still faces her internal conundrum of who to support and which way is right; Zaphead or human. Three.point.five for the effort.
