About this listen

American professor Dr. Alex Hightower has always been fascinated by Emily Bront and her brief and tragic life. But the question that haunts him is the one of her death. What were the secrets Bront took with her to the grave? The answers begin in the village of Haworth, where Bront lived and died. Alex journeys there in hope of proving his theory that Emily did not die a natural death, but rather committed suicide after a passionate and secret love affair. Soon Alex finds himself trying to decipher the mystery of an old letter, an ancient family curse, and a beautiful and mysterious woman who may hold the key to Emily Bront's secret. A unique and absorbing tale, Emily's Secret pieces together the puzzle of an untimely death.

A haunting love story about Emily Bronte

An extremely well researched story with an amazing hypothesis about the life and death of one of the most enigmatic and talented writers of Victorian England.

Good story but the narrator...

I enjoyed the story, I liked the main characters, Selena and Alex, but the narrator’s attempt at an English accent was odd. The way she said Emily was terrible, I couldn’t help but chuckle each time. It wasn’t enough to make me turn the book off but it was distracting at times. When she was speaking in her normal voice she did a good job.

New Twist on a Bronte!

This is intriguing for those who like classic literature and would enjoy engaging in new ideas on preconceived notions. This will pull you into a good mystery thriller. Warning: some dark scenes unfold but it remains light enough for the faint of heart to maintain their interest. Enjoy!

It’s not HAY-worth!!

This narrator is horrid! How can you neglect you job so much that basic pronunciations are wrong and the accents of 99% of the character are wrong? First, the story takes place in Haworth - the “a” pronounced as in “hat” and not “hay.” Second, Haworth is in West Yorkshire. But there is not a Yorkshire accent to be had in this performance. It sounds like a weird version of Irish laced with Scottish. Not even close. It’s absolutely grating on the nerves.

The story suffers from inconsistencies that cast doubt on how much time the author has spent in the areas she writes about. It is predictable enough that I found myself skipping ahead to find something new in the story, and being disappointed.

I will say this: the book inspired me to read about the Brontes myself and discover the real lives behind the fiction.
