About this listen

Emotive is a tale of life, love, compassion, and the pursuit of happiness as told through the eyes of the story's narrator, Linus. Linus is a puppy living in a small city located in the rolling hillsides of upstate New York. As the abnormalities of his owner Sam are all he knows since birth, he gains a perspective of unyielding acceptance and love towards the man who feeds him, takes him to the park, and murders women in his basement.

"It's a dog's life."

This is not the sort of book that this reader would normally chose - I do not much like dogs, yes, there are some of us around - but I have very much enjoyed performances of the narrator, George Kuch, in the past so decided to give it a try. And am so glad that I did. It is charming and, at times, graphic in accounts of violence as well as 'accidents'; rather fanciful, perhaps, in the main protagonist's relating events from his, Linus' point of view. But it works. And the reader travels with the little dog, faithful and loving towards violent and murderous first owner, trying always to be a good boy and, later, after he had been deserted, still looking for home.
As anticipated, George Kuch was an excellent narrator, telling the story in his intimate way direct to the reader: a perfect fit for this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed Emotive and must warmly thank the rights holder who, at my request, freely gifted me a complimentary copy via Audiobook Boom. Easy to read, this is a tale which will stay with me into the future: not so much the details but the emotional feelings behind it - I even feel more generously inclined towards dogs now, at least in tbeory. So this is a book I can recommend to all, even those whose liking for real life canines is not particularly strong.

Unique story from a great perspective.

I’m a huge dog lover so the story being from linus’ perspective was great. The amalgamation of crime story and pets life was uniquely amazing. I loved being able to know what Linus felt in every situation he was put it. I immersed myself into this listen and I was treated with all the feels.

Child kidnapping and torture

Not my cup of tea.

George Kuch is a good narrator.

I was intrigued by the premise of this story.

~Disclaimer: I received a free audiobook of this title~

I was intrigued by the premise of this story. A serial killer from a dog's perspective is compelling, but ultimately I have been left less than impressed. Although, I will say that the narrator did a good job with the story.

However, perhaps due to my obsessive interest in dogs, I found the perspective of the dog less than immersive. Dogs are not going to understand that commercials are trying to sell you something, and they don’t understand everything a human says. There were times I felt the perspective to be good, but other times I was dragged out of the story by the very undoglike perspective.

There is a fair bit of gore and whatnot in this story. If that is off-putting to you....well.... I guess I’m surprised that after reading the blurb you would be interested. I mean.....a serial killer kinda implies there is going to be death.

I would note that the kindle version wasn’t well formatted. It isn’t the biggest deal, but I find that a bit annoying. Maybe that will get fixed in the future. Fingers crossed.

I think overall I did end up feeling compelled to keep listening/reading. It wasn’t perfect, but I think if you enjoy the premise and are okay with a dark story then you could enjoy this.

Made me physically ill.

I love dogs and I like stories about serial killers. So I thought what? Both topics in one book? Awesome! However I should’ve stopped reading after the first case of animal abuse. The graphic descriptions of this dog being beaten, shot, stabbed, attacked by another dog... I finished reading only because I wanted to know how the author finished this dreadfully upsetting story. Although the story came full circle, and good wins over evil in the end, I still wish I’d never read the story because those graphic images are going to stay in my mind. And why in the world is there a dachshund in the picture? The dog in the book is a shaggy retriever type.
