About this listen
Ever wonder why your self-control, rationality, and compassion seem to go out the window when dealing with your partner? Couples therapist and psychiatrist Steven Stosny explains it all in this revelatory book about the divide between our adult and our toddler brains. Too often, conflict in our intimate relationships reactivates our least-regulated "toddler" side, bringing out an instinctive desire to assert our own way and make everything a zero-sum game. Dr. Stosny shows the way toward overcoming these destructive impulses and nurturing our more loving and clear-eyed inclinations. Drawing upon his decades of experience in working with troubled marriages, he distills his insights into an actionable guide for embracing our best impulses in our relationships.
Empowered Love is a valuable guide for married and live-in couples who struggle with an unhealthy dynamic; those already in individual or couples therapy who want a highly effective aid to help them communicate with their partner; and licensed therapists and counselors looking for an in-depth perspective on the developmental stages in play with relationship strife.

This book is about pleasure. It’s also about pain. Most important, it’s about how to find the delicate balance between the two, and why now more than ever finding balance is essential. We’re living in a time of unprecedented access to high-reward, high-dopamine stimuli: drugs, food, news, gambling, shopping, gaming, texting, sexting, Facebooking, Instagramming, YouTubing, tweeting....

Story
Success in work, love, and life depends on developing habits that activate the powerful prefrontal cortex when we need it most. Unfortunately, under stress, the human brain tends to revert to emotional habits we forged in toddlerhood: blame, denial, avoidance, reacting to a jerk like a jerk, and turning our connections into cold shoulders - or worse. In Soar Above, renowned relationship expert Dr. Steven Stosny offers a groundbreaking formula for building new, pressure-resistant habits.

Story
Betrayal has many faces, including anger, abuse, deceit, and infidelity. These feel like betrayal because they violate the implicit promise of emotional bonds, that your loved one will care about your well-being and never intentionally hurt you. If you've recently left a relationship where you felt betrayed by your partner, you may have difficulty moving on. In fact, it can seem impossible to view the world without the shadow of past betrayal hovering over you. As a result, you may struggle to create meaning in your life and to build new, loving relationships.

Story
Steve Harvey can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years - the many incredible women who can run a business, have three kids, maintain a household in tiptop shape, and chair a church group all at the same time. So when it comes to relationships, why can't these same women figure out what makes men commit? According to Steve, it's because they're asking other women for advice when they should be going directly to the source.

Very useful
This man knows his stuff. It’s clear that he has an incredible amount of experience in the field of helping couples, and what he says is constantly backed up by research. What it comes down to though, is that he does provide practical advice for how to improve your relationship, and how to get out of traps that plague unhealthy partnerships. There are no quick fixes, but that’s true for anything of value in life (my dad always says: “If it were easy, everyone would do it!”). A warning: The entire first half of the book is completely designed to give you scientific information about why your partner (or you) are flying off the handle, getting offended, saying the wrong things, misunderstanding him/her, thinking your partner is to blame, etc. Then part 2 is entirely designed to teach you how to turn this around and build something better and lasting with your partner. I would advise listening to the whole thing first and then re-listening to part 2 as many times as necessary. Thanks to the author for your hard work.

Loved this book!!
I would recommend this book to anybody that is struggling in their relationship and is desperately trying to make it work. It’s so insightful. I’ve listened to a lot of books in attempts to save my relationship with my husband. This is hands down the best one I’ve read! If you’re looking for a sign, this is it ;)

yuk yuk macho out-dated yuk
he instructs that couples force themselves to have sex when they are hurt, and ends the book reminding readers to try to feel sexy when hurt. not surprised this man wrote a book about talking less for better intimacy. this book teaches only how for totally sex-driven men to better hide the fact that he really doesn't value his partner. is the word "power" really appealing to describe a relationship for a woman who is emotionally abused?? i don't care how many times he repeats that he was "featured on oprah", yuk
