About this listen

In the future, mankind has learned to manipulate their DNA, harnessing only the good genes, like intelligence, strength, and height. They called this prime DNA and humans rushed to get these new pDNA injections, which gave them superhuman-like qualities. Centuries later, however, their DNA became so engineered that humans rarely lived past the age of 30, thanks to a new deadly disease called the Kiss. The only cure is to receive an injection of oDNA, DNA from an Original human that hasn't been genetically altered. Problem is there aren't many Originals left.

When 17-year-old Sage wakes up in a hospital with no memories, her only clue are the words "Run Now" written on her hand. Trusting her instincts, Sage barely escapes but only to collide with an outside world that would kill to get their hands on her.

With the help of unlikely allies, including a boy with hidden bat wings, Sage makes the dangerous trek to Eden, the last place for people like her and the only place she'll be safe from those at the Institute who would use her blood until she died. But with deadly Primes hot on their trail, Sage must make the ultimate sacrifice to save the people she's grown to love.

Good YA book

This has all your basic YA story tropes. Was a good read even if the science behind it is really bad.

Romance, sci fi, and human relationships

I really enjoyed this story. It’s interesting and does not keep you waiting long to learn the fate of the characters, but at the same time always surprises you with their decisions. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Interesting Concept Great Narrator

I thought the concept for the book was really interesting, one that I hadn't really seen before. This book incorporates several topics and integrates them well. I thought the narrator was really good. I plan to listen to the other books.

exciting and intriguing!

A new world exploring the future of genetic manipulation in humans. McClellan brings a fresh eye to the dystopian trope of world gone bad and a hero running from authority. An avid scifi and dystopia reader since the 70s, I was delighted with the world building and characters helping Sage to hopefully save the future of humanity.

Excellent narrator with great voices helped carry the story. There was no question about which character was speaking. Willing managed that great feat of transparency where it's easy to forget that there is a narrator at all, bringing the story to life.

Plenty of action and likeable characters keep the reader engaged. Very much the page-turner, it was hard to put the book down when IRL needed my full attention. There were a small handful of moments that felt lacking around the science and survival - pieces that needed reaction, thought, description or a little more attention to feel genuine. But the quick pace didn't leave much time to dwell on it.

If you aren't sure about reading a dystopia, this could be a great place to start. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
